About the position

The Senior Enterprise Data Architect at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is responsible for establishing and advocating for enterprise IT data architecture strategies, principles, standards, and policies. This role requires a deep technical knowledge in various domains such as data modeling, data warehousing, and business intelligence, and involves collaboration with ITSD and other departments to address data challenges while aligning with future business goals. The position is part of the Application Development Division and reports to the Division Director.

Responsibilities

  • Direct and advocate for ORNL Enterprise Data Architecture.
  • Maintain a deep technical knowledge of sophisticated domains including data at rest, data in transit, information security, analytics, machine learning, and AI.
  • Create the Enterprise level data vision and strategy, direction, goals, and standards.
  • Develop and maintain enterprise target data architecture to facilitate data retrieval and decision making across the enterprise.
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding and documentation of the data topology and inventory to integrate new technology requirements effectively.
  • Create short and long-term plans to move the laboratory to desired future state data architecture.
  • Ensure redundancy of data is minimized and establish a reliable master source when unavoidable.
  • Direct the analysis of the technology environment to detect critical deficiencies and recommend solutions for improvement.
  • Influence, mentor, and train others in data architecture principles, standards, and best practices.
  • Provide continually improving software and systems engineering practices that minimize development friction and enhance data architecture effectiveness.
  • Perform cost/benefit analysis when researching future state capabilities.
  • Ensure enterprise data solutions are scalable and adoptable according to changing business needs.
  • Promote a continuous delivery pipeline and rally the organization around a common technical vision.
  • Recommend best practices for architecture and implementation.
  • Uphold accountability for measurable high-quality, timely, and cost-effective results.
  • Review existing enterprise data architecture and establish metrics for improvements.
  • Define and ensure effective metrics to measure standards adoption and demonstrate value.
  • Cultivate strong relationships with industry authorities and participate in conferences.

Requirements

  • A BS in business, data science, computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, systems analysis or a related field of study and twelve (12) or more years of aligned professional experience.
  • A minimum of twelve (12) years of proven experience in relevant IT data architecture, business intelligence, data warehouse, data modeling, data analysis, and business analysis.
  • Advanced experience in architecting and deploying IT solutions in a regulated environment with information security implications.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, critical thinking, and technical skills, with experience managing multiple complex work streams.

Nice-to-haves

  • Advanced degree in business, data science, computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, systems analysis or a related field of study.
  • Advanced experience using architectural domain knowledge including cloud application architecture and infrastructure/platform/software as a service.
  • Advanced experience integrating data aspects of architecting public and public/private hybrid AWS and Azure cloud-based solutions.
  • Creative problem solver and collaborator with demonstrated planning and organizational skills.
  • Extensive knowledge of hardware, software, application, data storage, systems engineering.
  • Experience with application architecture, security, cloud computing, SaaS/PaaS, mobile applications, and continuous integration/deployment.
  • Knowledge of business process engineering principles and processes, modeling techniques, and information security and risk management.
