About The Position

The Senior Executive Director (SED) of the Urban Education Institute (UEI) at the University of Chicago is a senior leadership role responsible for providing strategic direction, management, and oversight of the institute. The SED will work closely with the Faculty Director and other senior leaders to advance UEI's mission of addressing educational inequality in urban communities through research, policy, and practice. This position involves fostering collaboration across teams, managing operations, and developing strategic partnerships to enhance the institute's impact and visibility.

Requirements

  • Minimum college or university degree in a related field.
  • 10+ years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in education, management/administration, sociology, or a closely related field.
  • Previous experience in urban education, grant-funded research organizations, and/or managing research projects.
  • Experience managing large and complex teams.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and provide support to the directors and executive directors of the Urban Education Institute.
  • Foster a culture of scientific excellence and public service, making recommendations for organizational improvement.
  • Oversee day-to-day operations, including staffing, resource allocation, and compliance with university policies.
  • Partner with the Faculty Director and senior leaders to set strategic priorities for the Institute.
  • Develop and articulate a compelling vision and strategic plan for UEI.
  • Cultivate strategic partnerships and relationships with key stakeholders in Chicago and nationally.
  • Represent UEI with educational leaders, policymakers, non-profit partners, and funders.
  • Support development and execution of a fundraising strategy for UEI.
  • Collaborate with the Crown Family School's Communication team to enhance UEI's reputation.
  • Provide guidance on communication needs, including press releases and newsletters.
  • Engage policymakers and thought leaders to raise awareness of urban education issues.
  • Develop and manage the institute's annual budget, ensuring fiscal responsibility.
  • Ensure effective communications across teams through frequent check-ins with senior leadership.
  • Foster a supportive and inclusive organizational culture that values collaboration and innovation.
  • Establish department priorities and manage the center budget.
