About the position

The Brookings Institution is seeking a Senior Fellow and Director for the Artificial Intelligence & Emerging Technology Initiative (AIET). This position is pivotal in shaping the vision, narrative, and strategy of the Initiative, which focuses on responsible AI policy and development. The Director will oversee the implementation of these strategies and enhance the visibility of Brookings' collective work in this critical area. As a Senior Fellow, the Director will also conduct research in their area of expertise, authoring and co-authoring significant research outputs while collaborating with scholars across the institution. The role requires a strong commitment to stakeholder engagement, fundraising, and strategic communications to ensure the Initiative's success and sustainability. The Director will work closely with the President and executive office staff, reporting directly to them while also collaborating with various departments within Brookings. The responsibilities include setting a collaborative research agenda, engaging with key policymakers and influencers, developing a fundraising strategy, and ensuring effective operations management. The Director will also be responsible for individual scholarship, which includes research and writing, publication management, and organizing events to promote research findings. This hybrid position allows for a combination of in-person work at the Washington, DC office and remote work options, providing flexibility while maintaining a strong presence in the Brookings community.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and refresh the vision for the AIET Initiative in collaboration with Scholar Stakeholders.
  • Stay informed on key trends and policy developments in AI to inform Brookings' research.
  • Strengthen relationships with key policymakers and influencers to enhance collaboration.
  • Develop a fundraising strategy and cultivate relationships with potential donors.
  • Oversee the Initiative's communications strategies and audience engagement efforts.
  • Ensure effective operations management and compliance with financial policies.
  • Author or co-author research and policy reports, blogs, and op-eds.
  • Engage with external experts to identify authors and speakers for publications and events.
  • Develop and deliver presentations for research projects and policy priorities.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree is required; a PhD in a relevant field is strongly preferred.
  • At least ten years of professional, policy, or academic work experience in a relevant field is required.
  • Familiarity with AI systems is required, with a history of informing policy decisions preferred.
  • Significant experience leading programmatic efforts that achieve policy impact is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to raise financial resources for initiatives is required.
  • Proven ability to conduct high-quality policy research and translate findings into practical recommendations is essential.
  • Technical expertise in data science, computational social science, and/or AI and machine learning systems is strongly preferred.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills are required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in strategic communications and engagement with high-profile audiences is preferred.
  • Ability to build and develop financial support for research initiatives is a plus.
