About the position

The Senior Field Engineer at HNTB is responsible for coordinating and monitoring inspection efforts on moderate to complex construction projects. This role ensures that contractor activities comply with design plans, specifications, and contractual requirements while assisting in the resolution of project issues. The engineer will act as a technical liaison between contractors and design engineering staff, ensuring effective communication and adherence to industry standards.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects, monitors, and oversees construction field work tasks to ensure conformance to plans and specifications.
  • Administers KPIs and budget, and interprets complex contract documents for compliance.
  • Performs or oversees on-site material testing and tracks item quantities, preparing pay estimates.
  • Initiates field changes to drawings and specifications, identifying discrepancies within documents.
  • Reviews contractor's daily construction reports for accuracy and prepares weekly progress reports.
  • Consults with Resident Engineer on work progress and construction problems, recommending solutions.
  • Stays current with industry technology and tools, utilizing them to enhance inspection efficiency.
  • Performs office engineer work, assisting in contractor claims and disputes, and processes RFIs and submittals.
  • Leads daily assignments, mentors, and trains employees, monitoring internal project controls.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering and 6 years relevant experience, or
  • Master's degree in Engineering and 5 years relevant experience, or
  • Doctorate degree in Engineering and 4 years relevant experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Professional Engineer (PE), Certified Construction Manager (CCM), American Concrete Institute (ACI), or Project Management Professional (PMP).
  • CM/CI experience on bridges, particularly with structural steel rehabilitation.
  • OSHA 30 certified preferred.
  • Agency safety training certified.
  • Trained in digital construction management software such as e-Builder, Constructware, Asite or similar preferred.
