About the position

The Field Service Engineer (FSE) at Cognex is responsible for providing technical support and solutions for complex industrial machine vision systems. This role involves on-site modifications, installations, and troubleshooting of electrical, optical, and mechanical systems to ensure optimal performance. The FSE serves as the primary contact for customers, coordinating resources and providing training and mentorship to new engineers and customers. The position requires a high level of technical expertise, customer service skills, and the ability to work independently while traveling frequently for project assignments.

Responsibilities

  • Develop on-site modifications and optimizations to electrical, optical, and mechanical systems.
  • Plan and perform on-site engineering assignments including installation, startup, testing, and fault-finding diagnoses.
  • Serve as the first point of contact for customers on administrative and technical matters for assigned projects.
  • Coordinate Cognex's resources and liaise with customer site managers.
  • Interpret customer needs and determine responsibility for resolution, keeping management informed of project status.
  • Provide high-level training or mentorship to new engineers and customers.
  • Conduct ongoing assessments of partners to ensure quality standards are maintained.
  • Review and approve the operational quality of Cognex equipment and instruct customers on system operation and maintenance.
  • Provide timely, detailed, and accurate reports on service work performed and product performance.
  • Demonstrate safety consciousness in equipment handling and procedures.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 4-6 years of relevant technical experience in Industrial/Manufacturing/Field Service environments.
  • High-level knowledge and experience in Java scripting for data formatting and communications scripting.
  • Strong CAD capability to interpret mechanical and electrical drawings.
  • Ability to handle difficult customer situations and escalate when necessary.
  • Excellent time-management and proactive communication skills.
  • Ability to provide high-level telephone technical support to various stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently complete technical analysis on complex systems.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in integrator or machine builder environments.
  • Knowledge of logistics products, solutions, and software.
  • Experience with industrial controls, networking, and communications protocols.
