About the position

The Senior Financial Analyst position at Abbott is a pivotal role within the Structural Heart division, located in St. Paul, Minnesota. This role is designed to enhance financial ownership, cost efficiency, and process improvement across various levels of leadership. The successful candidate will be responsible for complex financial planning, forecasting, and reporting, ensuring that all financial activities are conducted accurately and in a timely manner. The position requires a deep understanding of financial analysis and the ability to provide insights that drive business decisions. In this role, you will develop detailed financial forecasts that incorporate historical data, trends, and current business information. You will monitor departmental spending against the budget, highlighting any significant variances through detailed reports. Additionally, you will prepare journal entries and assist in the month-end close process to ensure accurate accounting practices are followed. Your responsibilities will also include preparing and distributing financial reports, conducting financial analyses, and evaluating new business opportunities through modeling various financial scenarios. The Senior Financial Analyst will also be expected to establish sound financial processes and cultivate a network of support to facilitate the completion of assignments. This role may involve mentoring less experienced staff and leading project teams, as well as influencing middle management on technical or business solutions. You will work independently, exercising judgment in selecting innovative methods to resolve problems, and your work will be reviewed upon completion to ensure it meets the established objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed financial forecasts incorporating historic, trended and current business information.
  • Monitor functional and departmental spending versus budget by highlighting material variances using system generated detail and trend reports.
  • Prepare journal entries and assist in month end close as needed to ensure proper accounting at the functional and departmental level.
  • Prepare and distribute financial reports and packages by gathering and analyzing information related to current performance.
  • Perform financial analysis, as directed by management, and recommend alternatives courses of action by utilizing appropriate financial tools (e.g. EVA, NPV analysis).
  • Evaluate new business opportunities, potential acquisitions, new products, tax planning and spending initiatives by modeling alternative financial scenarios (e.g. revenues, profitability etc).
  • Prepare sensitivity analysis impact on revenue, expenses and profitability by modeling changes in key variables (recommending appropriate course of action).
  • Develop and utilize sound financial processes.
  • Establish and cultivate an extensive network of support to facilitate completion of assignments.
  • Participate in the development of less experienced staff by setting an example, providing guidance, and offering counsel.
  • May lead a project team and participate in determining goals and objectives for projects.
  • Influence middle management on technical or business solutions.
  • Plan and organize non-routine tasks with approval and establish priorities of work assignments.
  • Exercise judgment in selecting innovative, practical methods to achieve problem resolution.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related discipline
  • 4+ years of Financial Planning and Analysis experience
  • Advanced level of proficiency with Excel (e.g., Pivot tables, VLOOKUP, other functionalities)
  • Proficiency with PowerPoint
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to articulate financial results based on audience
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Accuracy and attention to detail

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related discipline
  • Progressive accounting and/or financial planning and analysis experience in a cost accounting/manufacturing industry environment
  • Experience with SAP ERP and Hyperion Planning/Essbase systems
  • Ability to manage tight time commitments in high-pressure situations
  • Ability to work effectively under uncertainties and flexibility to meet changing priorities in a proactive manner
