About the position

The Senior Financial Analyst (SFA) plays a crucial role in developing, monitoring, and managing the operating and capital budgets for the University. This position is responsible for helping to establish short and long-term financial goals and forecasts for key strategic initiatives and special projects. The SFA collaborates closely with departmental leaders to analyze financial statements and variances, ensuring responsible resource allocation in a tuition-dependent institution. Responsibilities

  • Support the annual operating and capital budgeting process.
  • Analyze monthly financial statements and provide written narratives on key budget variances.
  • Regularly update projections for current year performance.
  • Calculate key financial metrics for stakeholders throughout the year.
  • Evaluate programs and policies to clarify resource allocation decisions.
  • Consult with departmental leaders to understand key revenue and expense drivers.
  • Produce regular and ad-hoc financial and operating reports with recommendations.
  • Provide internal financial support and advise on complex economic issues.
  • Analyze internal accounting reports and external comparative reports to benchmark best practices.
  • Participate in the monthly accounting closing process.
  • Assess, modify, and implement processes to increase efficiency and accuracy.
  • Analyze and update the allowance for doubtful accounts monthly.
  • Develop and maintain expert knowledge in the University's financial systems and assist departments with financial reports.
  • Participate in university audits and perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a highly analytical field required.
  • Master's Degree in a related area preferred.
  • A minimum of five years of experience as a financial analyst or related area, or a Master's degree and three years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with budgeting, financial planning, financial analysis, and financial reporting.
  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), fund accounting, and grant accounting.
  • Ability to analyze complex business processes and leverage influence to drive change.
  • Strong communication skills including written, oral, and listening abilities.
  • Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
