About the position

As a Senior Fraud Strategy Data Scientist at BILL, you will play a pivotal role in our Fraud Risk Strategy team, focusing on fraud detection, risk analysis, and loss mitigation. BILL is a leader in financial automation software for small and mid-size businesses (SMBs), and we are dedicated to automating the future of finance to help businesses thrive. In this position, you will leverage your extensive experience in fraud risk control strategy to lead key projects that enhance our fraud detection capabilities and refine our risk strategies. You will be responsible for developing predictive algorithms and performing analytics that directly impact our business goals. Your role will involve collaborating with Product Managers, Engineers, and Business Stakeholders to design, create, and execute control strategies. You will maintain and refine risk strategy frameworks to ensure they are up-to-date and performing at a high level, ultimately delivering on key performance indicators (KPIs). You will also build and deploy data-driven monitoring rules to quickly respond to evolving risk trends, ensuring that our strategies are effective and efficient. In addition to your technical skills, you will be expected to develop flexible performance dashboards that provide insights at the right level of granularity for various audiences. Your hands-on experience with complex data tools, such as Tableau, will be crucial in performing monitoring and diagnostic analytics. You will apply your advanced knowledge of data metrics and financial fraud risk indicators to recommend enhancements and optimize processes that align with our business goals. This position requires strong project leadership skills, as you will partner with cross-functional teams to design strategies across multiple touchpoints. You will establish business requirements, shared KPIs, and guide execution while performing validation and maintenance of strategies. Mentorship and support of junior team members will also be a key aspect of your role, helping them achieve their goals and develop their skills in the field.

Responsibilities

  • Lead key projects associated with fraud detection, risk analysis, and loss mitigation.
  • Develop, maintain, and refine risk strategy frameworks to ensure high performance and alignment with KPIs.
  • Build and deploy data-driven monitoring rules to detect and respond to evolving risk trends.
  • Collaborate with Product Managers, Engineers, and Business Stakeholders to design and execute control strategies.
  • Utilize advanced analytics techniques to refine end-to-end control strategies and solve complex business problems.
  • Create flexible performance dashboards for monitoring and reporting purposes.
  • Wrangle complex data using tools like Tableau for monitoring and diagnostic analytics.
  • Identify and execute new model/rules/product opportunities to optimize processes.
  • Mentor and support junior team members in achieving their goals.

Requirements

  • Minimum 6+ years of experience in end-to-end fraud risk control strategy within eCommerce or online payments.
  • Experience in designing, creating, and executing control strategies through analytical rule development.
  • Proficiency in building complex SQL/Python scripts to solve ambiguous problems with minimal guidance.
  • Expertise in interpreting results and using data findings to influence decision-making.
  • Hands-on experience with data wrangling and analytics tools, particularly Tableau.
  • Advanced knowledge of data metrics, profiles/typologies, and key indicators in the financial fraud risk domain.
  • Experience in project leadership and collaboration with cross-functional teams.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in experimental design related to fraud typologies targeting good customers.
  • Knowledge of data/control governance, including proposal development and user acceptance definition.
  • Familiarity with pre/post-implementation validation and approval workflows.
