About the position

WSP is currently seeking a Senior Geologist to join our Regulatory Engineering & Geological Services Team in either our Houston, TX or Baton Rouge, LA office. This position involves engaging in projects that address subsurface geological and engineering concerns, particularly in relation to site selection, feasibility studies, permitting, and the petitioning of underground injection control wells for both nonhazardous and hazardous waste injection, as well as cavern storage and carbon sequestration. The team plays a crucial role in liaising with state and federal regulatory agencies on behalf of our clients, ensuring compliance and facilitating project success. As a Senior Geologist, you will be responsible for mapping and interpreting site geology to assess its suitability for various applications, including carbon sequestration, industrial waste disposal, oil and gas waste disposal, and salt cavern solution mining and storage. Your expertise will be essential in assisting with the development of technical permit applications for disposal well and salt cavern operators, which may involve new well development, modifications, amendments, and renewals. You will also participate in feasibility studies, support drilling activities remotely, and address regulatory compliance issues as they arise. In this role, you will work closely with project managers and clients on small to medium-sized projects, ensuring that high-quality deliverables are completed on time and within the defined project scope and budget. Collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of geologists, engineers, CAD specialists, and administrative assistants will be key to delivering successful project outcomes. Responsibilities

  • Map and interpret site geology for suitability for carbon sequestration, industrial waste disposal, oil and gas waste disposal, or salt cavern solution mining and storage.
  • Assist with the development of technical permit applications for disposal well and salt cavern operators, including new well development, modifications, amendments, and renewals.
  • Participate in feasibility studies and support drilling activities remotely.
  • Assist the project manager with client and regulatory agency interactions on small and medium-sized projects.
  • Complete high-quality deliverables on time within project scope-of-work and budgeted hours.
  • Work with a multidisciplinary team of geologists, engineers, CAD specialists, and administrative assistants to deliver successful projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Geology.
  • Professional Geologist License.
  • 5-7 years of experience working as a petroleum or environmental geologist or hydrogeologist.
  • 1 year of experience working as an environmental consultant with regular and sustained client and regulatory engagement.
  • Experienced with technical writing and developing large technical documents.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master of Science in Geology.
  • Permitting experience with TCEQ, LDNR, US EPA or similar.
  • Permitting experience in Underground Injection Control (UIC) and/or Cavern experience.
