About the position

Google's Cloud Supply Chain and Operations (CSCO) team is at the forefront of shaping and strengthening design for operations, focusing on hardware and software requirements for the next generation of platforms. As a Senior Hardware Design Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in owning the strategy and driving execution across a diverse portfolio of projects, which includes everything from network switches to machine learning pods. The primary objective of this role is to streamline the deployment, maintenance, and repair processes of these platforms, ultimately reducing both time and costs associated with these operations. In this position, you will be responsible for interfacing with various stakeholders, including those from data center operations, manufacturing, and supply chain, to crystallize the design for operations requirements. Your influence will extend to new platform architectures, where you will provide technical insights and conduct trade-off analyses in collaboration with stakeholders from the Hardware Design and Software Architecture teams. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to mentor experienced team members within operations, fostering in-house competence in platform architecture, encompassing both hardware and software aspects. This role requires a strategic mindset and the ability to navigate complex organizational boundaries, aligning goals and resources across multiple teams, including Engineering, Network, Power, Compliance, Safety, Supply Chain, and Data Center Operations. Your contributions will be essential in ensuring that the design for operations is seamlessly integrated into the architecture of both hardware and software platforms, while also investigating alternative architectures and roadmaps to enable optimized system design.

Responsibilities

  • Develop the strategic roadmap with stakeholders from data center operations, supply chain, and manufacturing to capture the design for operations requirements.
  • Identify critical user journeys that capture operational requirements (e.g., serviceability, automation, safety, repair cost, and deployment time).
  • Integrate design for operations into the architecture of platforms hardware and software and investigate alternative architectures and roadmaps to enable an optimized system design.
  • Engage in the development of the system architecture including design intent, functional trade-offs, and deployment risks.
  • Align organizational boundaries within the Engineering, Network, Power, Compliance, Safety, Supply Chain, and Data Center Operations team to leverage goals and resources.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or equivalent practical experience.
  • 4 years of experience working in a Product Design for Data center platforms technical environment, or 3 years of experience with an advanced degree.
  • Experience in manufacturing, hardware validation, and quality control.
  • Experience in hardware platform development managing platforms from concept to production.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in Engineering.
  • Experience as a systems architect for Machine Learning (ML) systems.
  • Experience in representing stakeholders during executive-level planning and prioritization exercises.
  • Excellent leadership skills to define strategy, drive execution, and resolve conflict.
  • Excellent communication and multi-tasking skills in an environment of shifting priorities.
