About the position

The Senior Wireless RF Regulatory Engineer will play a pivotal role in ensuring compliance with wireless communication regulations and standards as the complexity of radiofrequency governmental regulations continues to increase globally. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work with cutting-edge wireless technologies and collaborate with cross-functional teams to bring innovative products to market while ensuring compliance with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and other global regulations. The engineer will be responsible for comprehending and interpreting global RF regulations and partnering with design teams to ensure compliance through design and testing outcomes. In this role, the engineer will need to possess a diverse set of people and technical skills to achieve General Motors' business goals. The selected individual will be expected to provide technical leadership, foster innovation, facilitate communication, and inspire passion within the team. The engineer will interpret and understand regulations to support design teams in creating test plans and drive compliance procedures and test methodologies for wireless RF devices. They will work closely with suppliers and Design Release Engineers (DREs) to ensure RF regulatory compliance with FCC and global regulations for various wireless technologies, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular, NFC, and Inductive Power Transfer. Staying updated on the latest FCC and global regulations, as well as emerging wireless technologies, is crucial for this role. The engineer will participate in working groups to remain informed about regulatory developments and contribute to shaping industry standards. They will also provide technical expertise and support resolutions for regulatory compliance issues, as well as risk assessments to design teams when RF devices do not successfully complete RF regulatory compliance testing at proper Vehicle Development milestones.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret and understand the regulations to support the design teams in creating test plans and drive compliance procedures/test methodologies for wireless RF devices.
  • Work with suppliers and DREs to drive RF regulatory compliance with FCC and global regulations for wireless technologies, including but not limited to Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular, NFC, and Inductive Power Transfer.
  • Stay updated on the latest FCC and global regulations and emerging wireless technologies to ensure compliance and provide guidance to internal teams.
  • Participate in working groups to stay informed about regulatory developments and contribute to shaping industry standards.
  • Interpret regulations from different regulatory bodies, leveraging public policy and legal team as necessary in providing feedback to support creation of internal advisories informing design teams.
  • Provide technical expertise and support resolutions for regulatory compliance issues.
  • Provide risk assessments to design teams when RF devices are not successfully completing RF regulatory compliance testing at proper Vehicle Development milestones.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, Physics or equivalent.
  • 5+ years academic background and/or experience in RF electrical engineering, RF circuit design, EMC, wireless communications, signal processing.
  • Experience with Wireless technologies, such as 5G, LTE, GNSS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC, Inductive Power Transfer.
  • Strong knowledge of conducted and radiated test methodologies for evaluating EMC and RF performance of wireless devices.
  • Working knowledge of regulatory/industry conformance specifications (radiated, conducted, SAR) for consumer or automotive products.
  • Working knowledge in wireless regulatory process, interpretation and defining methodologies for compliance.
  • High level of analytical problem-solving skills where problems are complex and difficult.
  • Effective communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical information to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master of Science in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, Physics or equivalent.
  • Experience in wireless regulatory compliance, specifically with FCC regulations, RED 2014/53/EU, or global regulations that cover radio apparatus & broadcasting equipment.
  • Experience working with telecommunication certification bodies such as TCBs and GMAs, or at the Federal Communications Commission.
  • Relevant certifications in wireless RF regulatory compliance are desirable.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to interpret and apply regulatory requirements to ensure compliance.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and lead complex assignments with the highest level of autonomy and accountability for results.
  • Strong appetite for Technical leadership in a diverse, fast-paced product environment.
  • Excellent personal interaction and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with diverse teams.
