About the position

As a Senior Hardware Engineer at Komatsu, you will play a crucial role in designing world-class intrinsic safe electronic sensors and control hardware specifically tailored for hazardous underground mining environments. This position requires you to engage with a highly skilled cross-disciplinary team to formulate and innovate products that meet the rigorous demands of the industry. You will take technical ownership of hardware design projects, leading architecture and design reviews with both internal teams and external suppliers. Your responsibilities will also include overseeing various aspects of electronic product readiness, ensuring manufacturability, and performing thorough testing and validation of hardware prior to their release. In this role, you will leverage your extensive experience in electronics hardware design, particularly in areas such as intrinsic safety, FPGA design, and low power microprocessor-based controllers. You will be expected to lead the development of complex CPU, FPGA, and ASIC-based PCBA designs, utilizing your strong background in schematic capture, PCB layout, and circuit analysis applications. Your expertise with electronic test equipment will be essential in ensuring the quality and reliability of the products you design. The position may require up to 10% travel, allowing you to engage with various stakeholders and enhance your understanding of the operational environments where your designs will be implemented. This is a full-time position based in Warrendale, PA, and you will be working a day shift, contributing to a dynamic team focused on maximizing value for customers through innovative solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Design world-class intrinsic safe electronic sensors and control hardware for use in hazardous underground mining environments.
  • Engage with an experienced cross-disciplinary team to formulate and design innovative products.
  • Take technical ownership for the hardware design projects.
  • Lead architecture and design reviews with internal teams and suppliers.
  • Oversee various aspects of electronic product readiness including manufacturability.
  • Perform testing and validation of hardware prior to their release.

Requirements

  • BS or MS in Electrical, Electronics, Computer Engineering or relevant field.
  • 15 years' experience in electronics hardware design, including intrinsic safety IEC60079-11 electronic hardware development.
  • Experience with IECEx/ATEX, MSHA certifications.
  • Proficiency in FPGA design and design of low power microprocessor-based controllers.
  • Experience with high-speed communication systems and Ethernet-based networks.
  • Knowledge of programmable logic design, digital circuit design, and low power analogue circuit design.
  • Experience with optical/imaging components and systems, as well as RF components and systems.
  • Proven experience leading the development of complex CPU, FPGA, and ASIC based PCBA designs.
  • Extensive experience with schematic capture, PCB layout, and circuit analysis applications such as Altium, OrCAD, SPICE, eCADSTAR, etc.
  • Strong experience using electronic test equipment such as logic analyzers, spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, digital oscilloscopes, and multimeters.
  • Experience in the design of autonomous sensors such as lidars, radars, and cameras is a plus.
  • Detail-oriented, consistent, and motivated self-starter with the ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-focused environment.
  • Familiarity with safety-critical system design and industry standards is a plus.
  • Knowledge of common machine control sensors, actuators, and other typical control devices.
