About the position

Samsara is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to join our innovative team. In this role, you will be pivotal in driving the electrical engineering aspects of product architecture and design. Your responsibilities will encompass thorough feasibility studies, design considerations, and cost analyses, focusing on key components such as thermals and antennas. You will leverage our extensive telemetry data and customer insights to guide your design process, ensuring that the products we develop meet the highest standards of performance and reliability. Collaboration is at the heart of our approach. You will work closely with Product Management, Product Development, Firmware, Engineering Project Management, New Product Introduction, and Hardware leadership to make informed trade-offs and decisions. Your expertise will be shared with fellow engineers, fostering a culture of knowledge exchange and continuous improvement. The role also involves close collaboration with our Supply Chain team, laboratories, and external design resources to achieve our objectives effectively. This position is hybrid, requiring you to be in our San Francisco office three days a week, with the flexibility to work remotely for the remaining two days. You should be prepared for travel up to 25% of the time, necessitating proximity to an international airport. We are open to candidates from across the U.S. who are willing to relocate to the Bay Area. As a Senior Electrical Engineer, you will be responsible for shipping successful products at scale, conducting research on the latest silicon technologies, and evaluating system feature trade-offs to create comprehensive system specifications. You will lead the development process from prototyping through field validation, ensuring that performance, cost, and schedule goals are met. Additionally, you will manage relationships with top JDM companies to design, validate, and manufacture quality products, while championing Samsara's cultural principles as we scale globally.

Responsibilities

  • Drive the electrical engineering aspects of product architecture and design.
  • Conduct feasibility, design, and cost studies for key components.
  • Collaborate with Product Management and cross-functional engineering teams to evaluate system feature trade-offs.
  • Lead the development process from prototyping through field validation according to performance, cost, and schedule goals.
  • Manage relationships with JDM companies and external consultants for product design and validation.
  • Champion and embed Samsara's cultural principles within the team.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience shipping high volume hardware programs with ODM and JDM partners.
  • Systems design expertise including chipset/SoC selection, power optimization, antennas/RF, batteries, sensors, and PCB design.
  • Proven record navigating trade-offs between design, manufacturability, schedule, and cost.
  • Experience with a variety of systems for different use cases including automotive and industrial applications.
  • Proven record of system bring up/debug including desense, validation, and power management.
  • BS or MS degree in Electrical Engineering or related technical field.
  • Strong ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams and drive independent work.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with certifications and testing in industrial and automotive settings (ISO16750, AECQ100, etc).
  • Schematic and layout experience in Altium and Cadence Allegro.
  • Systems design expertise with cameras and extreme environmental conditions.
  • Experience with design for supply, reliability testing, and manufacturing.
