About the position

The Senior Human-Centered AI Engineer at MITRE will focus on driving research in AI and Machine Learning technologies to address complex challenges related to human-AI interaction and societal impacts of AI. This role emphasizes the application of human-centered engineering principles to enhance collaboration between diverse human teams and AI systems, ultimately aiming to produce superior outcomes. The successful candidate will engage in designing, executing, and applying research that aligns with the priorities and use cases of MITRE's sponsors.

Responsibilities

  • Assist MITRE in executing and applying research to solve challenging problems related to human-AI interaction and/or societal impacts of AI in domains such as healthcare, intelligence, and defense.
  • Design and evaluate human interactions with LLM, AI, and ML technologies.
  • Contribute to and communicate human-centered research on AI, including formal experimental research and observational/naturalistic research.
  • Demonstrate academic and industry best practices for human-centered AI research.

Requirements

  • Typically requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 3 years and a Master's degree; or a PhD with relevant experience who can immediately contribute at this job step; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
  • Strong fundamentals in human factors, cognitive engineering, human-centered design, or another related approach to human-systems interaction.
  • Hands-on research experience with one or more of the following human-AI interaction topics: Usability of AI systems, Augmenting human work and decision making with AI, Explainable AI, Trust in AI, Societal and sociotechnical impacts of AI, AI risks and governance.
  • Hands-on experience working with LLMs and basic understanding of their capabilities and limitations.
  • Proven ability to work independently to learn new technologies, techniques, processes, platforms, and systems.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain DoD Secret clearance.

Nice-to-haves

  • Advanced degree in Human Factors, Computer Science, Social Sciences, or related field.
  • Experience with and/or passion for working with national security or the public sector.
  • Track record of publications, reports, presentations, essays, etc. about human interactions with AI.
  • Active DoD Top Secret/SCI clearance.
  • Experience in Python or another programming language frequently used for AI/ML prototyping.
