About the position

The Senior Hydropower Specialist at the World Bank Group plays a crucial role in facilitating the preparation and implementation of hydropower projects, contributing to institutional development in host countries. This position involves leading technical reviews, guiding project appraisals, and ensuring projects are economically viable and environmentally sustainable. The specialist will also engage in analytical work, knowledge management, and coordination with various stakeholders to promote best practices in hydropower development.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the review of technical documents including pre-feasibility and feasibility studies, design and specifications, environmental and social impact assessments, and power system plans.
  • Guide the technical appraisal to ensure hydropower projects are technically feasible and economically viable.
  • Lead the Bank's supervision of hydropower projects during construction, ensuring continuous engagement of expert panels and reviewing reports.
  • Lead analytical and knowledge generation activities to build awareness in key technical aspects of hydropower development.
  • Coordinate with staff from other units and disciplines, and represent the Bank in important fora and international meetings on hydropower.
  • Contribute to corporate tasks and reviews carried out by the Infrastructure Energy Global Knowledge & Expertise unit.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in hydropower related civil engineering or a core competency such as water engineering, geotechnical engineering, or project management.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience related to hydropower or water resource development in both developed and developing contexts.
  • Experience in environmental and social aspects of large infrastructure development.
  • Experience in generation planning in hydro or mixed hydro-thermal systems.
  • Experience in construction of hydropower projects, with tunneling and underground experience being advantageous.
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical and electrical components of hydropower projects and their grid connections.
  • Mathematical modeling experience in hydraulic, hydrodynamic, or structural contexts.
  • Knowledge of energy sector reform issues in developing countries.
  • Strong organizational, research, and oral presentation skills.
  • Proven ability to work in a team and intercultural environment with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
