About the position

As the Senior Engineer, Warehouse Design at GXO Logistics, you will play a pivotal role in leading the development of comprehensive design packages that encompass various critical elements of warehouse operations. Your responsibilities will include creating material flow diagrams, facility layouts, and designs for material handling equipment, automation, storage media, and processes. You will also conduct slotting and pick path analyses to optimize warehouse efficiency. This position requires a collaborative approach, as you will work closely with the Data Analytics team to analyze client data, determine order profiles, and apply appropriate storage media solutions. On a typical day, you will prepare engineering calculations and documentation that detail operating concepts such as storage and shipping capacity, facility sizing, zoning, and slotting. You will facilitate reviews with key stakeholders, including engineering peers and operations teams, to ensure alignment on project goals. Your expertise will also support the business development process by assisting the solutions team in responding to RFPs, developing presentation materials, and engaging with potential clients. In addition to design responsibilities, you will lead the detailed engineering process for new business awards, transforming conceptual designs into fully detailed plans ready for implementation. This includes performing data analyses, developing material handling specifications, and collaborating with vendors to obtain quotes. You will generate detailed AutoCAD layouts that fit into selected facilities and conduct joint planning sessions with clients to identify and resolve any issues that arise during the design process. Your role will also involve managing material handling and automation vendors throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring that installations are completed on schedule and meet performance testing requirements. This position is essential for ensuring that GXO Logistics continues to provide cutting-edge supply chain solutions to its clients, leveraging your engineering expertise to create efficient and effective warehouse designs.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with Data Analytics team to analyze client data to determine order profiles, storage media application, product slotting, velocity, SKU affinities, ABC analysis.
  • Prepares engineering calculations and documents to describe solutions and detailed operating concepts such as storage and shipping capacity, facility sizing, zoning, slotting, waving, etc.
  • Designs the overall facility layout, storage media, and flow paired with the appropriate equipment supporting the Concept of Operations.
  • Supports the business development process by assisting the solutions team's response to RFPs, including developing materials and presenting to potential clients.
  • Leads detailed engineering process on new business awards to take the design from conceptualization to full detailed design ready for implementation.
  • Conducts joint planning sessions with clients and performs gap analysis to ensure issues are resolved; identifies changes to the scope and provides necessary documentation and escalation.
  • Participates in the implementation of new business by preparing WMS configuration documentation, including all needed locations, slotting, zoning, sequences for put-away and picking, and allocation rules for the facility.
  • Manages material handling and automation vendors through schedule, permitting, installation, commissioning, punch lists, etc., and validates all equipment installation, including necessary performance testing.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field, or equivalent related work or military experience.
  • 2 years of engineering experience in supply chain management, logistics, warehousing or a related field.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office.
  • Experience in an AS9100 or ISO9001 production environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • 7 years of experience as an Industrial Engineer.
  • Extensive AutoCAD experience.
  • Ability to travel up to 50%.
  • Time study measurement, such as MOST, a plus.
  • Third-Party Logistics (3PL) experience in warehousing, distribution center or fulfillment.
  • Analytical skills.
  • Project and resource management experience.
