About the position

The Senior Infrastructure Engineer at Rice University is a key member of the Office of Information Technology's Platform Engineering & Infrastructure team. This role is responsible for administering, developing, and supporting various compute, storage, collaboration, and cloud infrastructure platforms and services. The engineer will collaborate with peers to create scalable and secure infrastructure solutions, manage multiple projects, and drive strategic initiatives within the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Administer, develop, and support cloud, hybrid-cloud, and private-cloud compute and storage environments.
  • Design, develop, install, and maintain operating systems, utilities, and applications software on computing systems.
  • Evaluate and recommend new technologies and enhancements to improve the infrastructure environment.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to leverage tools and improve processes for efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Document systems infrastructure for users and support personnel.
  • Collaborate with other IT support teams on projects and support issues.
  • Assist with the maintenance of distributed storage infrastructure, including NAS and SAN devices.
  • Implement security policies for software-defined networking and firewalling across compute environments.
  • Provide technical support for escalated tickets and peer customer support personnel.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field or equivalent experience.
  • 4+ years of experience in an Infrastructure Engineer or Systems Administrator role.
  • Experience in configuring and administering enterprise-class servers and operating systems (Linux/Windows).
  • Deep technical expertise in infrastructure design and management of public cloud platforms (Azure/AWS/GCP).
  • Advanced knowledge of virtualization platforms and cloud-native applications.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex systems issues and identify solutions.
  • Proven ability to lead large deployment and implementation projects.
  • Strong customer service skills and self-motivation.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
  • 5 years of experience as an Infrastructure Engineer or Systems Administrator.
  • Experience with Microsoft Azure, AWS, or GCP cloud platforms.
  • Experience with cloud collaboration platforms like Microsoft Office 365 and Google Workspace.
  • Familiarity with container technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
  • General coding experience with tools like Terraform and Python.
  • Experience with data center firewalls such as Cisco or Juniper.
  • Familiarity with Project Management methodologies.
  • Prior experience in a Higher Education environment.
