About the position

The Senior Instructional Designer at UMass Amherst plays a crucial role in leading the design and development of online, hybrid, and face-to-face courses. This position involves functional supervision of the Instructional Design, Engagement and Support (IDEAS) group, ensuring high-quality online instruction through quality assurance and collaboration with faculty. The role also includes mentoring other instructional design staff and participating in the development of policies and standards for online courses.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development of offline/online upskilling educational and research projects/policies for faculty on emerging trends in instructional design and learning technologies.
  • Collaborate on the development of professional development workshops related to course design and online teaching.
  • Consult with University faculty to design courses, including finalizing course goals, learning objectives, and media use.
  • Work with instructional designers and course design teams on strategic initiatives and project timelines.
  • Provide quality assurance for developed courses to ensure high standards in learning design and accessibility.
  • Manage projects for the assessment and improvement of current courses and program development.
  • Participate in the development and review of policies and standards for online courses.
  • Mentor and train instructional design staff members.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree plus four years of related professional experience.
  • Demonstrated supervisory and/or mentorship skills.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of instructional design theories and methodologies.
  • Knowledge of trending approaches and technologies used in higher education.
  • Experience developing course materials in an LMS.
  • Strong project management skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Experience implementing instructional design practices and course improvement models.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with multimedia technologies for audio, video, and web conferencing.
  • Familiarity with online Learning Management Systems (LMS) used in higher education.
  • Public speaking and delivering faculty workshops.
