About the position

As a Senior Instructional Designer at First Command, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the training landscape for Advisors, Field Support Personnel, and Home Office employees. This position is not just about creating training materials; it involves acting as a Development Project Leader (DPL) for various strategic training initiatives, ensuring that all training tools, manuals, and systems are developed, delivered, and maintained with the utmost quality and consistency. You will utilize a variety of tools and software to create engaging training experiences through platforms such as OneNet and First Command's Learning Management System (LMS). Your expertise will be crucial in designing, developing, and maintaining multimedia course materials and training collateral that meet the diverse needs of our audience. In this role, you will be responsible for selecting and implementing the most effective instructional methods and procedures tailored to specific training situations and target audiences. Collaboration is key; you will work closely with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to research and resolve content ambiguities, ensuring that all training materials are accurate and up-to-date. Your ability to communicate complex instructional design concepts clearly will be essential as you advise colleagues and stakeholders on best practices. You will also be tasked with converting existing training materials into performance-based training tools and manuals, ensuring that they are relevant and effective. Additionally, you will periodically review the entire training library to maintain high standards of quality and consistency. Your role may also involve providing basic technical support for the LMS and assisting with video conversions and other tasks to support home office classes. This position requires a proactive approach to identifying necessary changes in training tools and manuals, ensuring that our training resources evolve alongside the needs of the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, deliver, and maintain multi-media course materials and training collateral.
  • Select and use appropriate training/instructional methods and procedures for projects and advise colleagues as needed.
  • Research and resolve content ambiguities by partnering with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs).
  • Collaborate with content experts to identify training requirements and edit content accordingly.
  • Utilize design methodology and various applications to develop and maintain training materials and systems.
  • Communicate instructional design concepts and processes effectively to customers.
  • Convert existing training materials into performance-based training tools/manuals using instructional design experience.
  • Serve as a reviewer and tester for content developed by colleagues.
  • Utilize appropriate tools and software to deliver training via the Web or other methods.
  • Work with customers to implement necessary changes to existing training tools/manuals.
  • Periodically review training library components to ensure consistency and quality.
  • Input new records and changes into the maintenance database.
  • Assist with provisioning and basic technical support of the Learning Management System.
  • Support home office classes with video conversions and other tasks as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience using an instructional design methodology.
  • Completion of advanced training in instructional design and/or e-learning preferred.
  • Training/Certification in Criterion Referenced Instruction (CRI) or a comparable instructional design methodology preferred.
  • Advanced computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design.
  • Excellent analytical ability, attention to detail, and proven ability to work independently and in teams.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills, including active listening skills.
  • Excellent written communication skills, including superior editing skills and the ability to communicate information clearly in writing.
  • Adaptability to shifting priorities in a dynamic environment.
  • Proficiency in e-Learning authoring tools, Learning Management Systems, and other tools used in training resource creation.
