About the position

As a Senior Instrumentation & Controls Engineer at Sargent & Lundy, you will play a pivotal role in the modernization of power plant control systems for our electric power generation clients. This position is focused on the engineering aspects of upgrading and replacing existing control systems with advanced digital solutions. You will be involved in major process controls engineering projects specifically tailored for nuclear power plants, ensuring that these critical systems meet the highest standards of safety and efficiency. Your responsibilities will encompass a variety of tasks, including the design and implementation of digital systems such as PLCs, DCS, touchscreen displays, and network switches. You will also be responsible for developing functional requirements and procurement specifications for instrumentation and control systems, ensuring that all components are suitable for nuclear applications. Additionally, you will conduct evaluations for process instrumentation replacements and prepare nuclear modification packages, which are essential for maintaining compliance with regulatory standards. In this role, you will also engage in mechatronics and control systems design for various plant components, including pumps, valves, heat exchangers, steam turbines, and reactors. Your expertise will contribute to enhancing the functionality and reliability of our clients' plants. Regular interaction with clients is a key aspect of this position; you will attend meetings and perform site walkdowns to ensure client satisfaction with our deliverables. Furthermore, you will have the opportunity to mentor and guide less experienced engineers in the field of nuclear instrumentation and controls design, fostering their professional development and ensuring the continuity of expertise within the team.

Responsibilities

  • Work on major process controls engineering projects for upgrades and modifications to nuclear power plants.
  • Design and implement digital systems including PLC, DCS, touchscreen displays, and network switches.
  • Develop functional requirements and procurement specifications for instrumentation and control systems for nuclear power plants.
  • Conduct process instrumentation replacement evaluation reports and prepare nuclear modification packages.
  • Engage in mechatronics and control systems design for pumps, valves, heat exchangers, steam turbines, and reactors.
  • Attend client meetings and perform site walkdowns to ensure client satisfaction with work products.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to less experienced nuclear instrumentation and controls design engineers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in instrumentation and controls engineering, particularly in nuclear power plants.
  • Strong knowledge of digital control systems, including PLCs and DCS.
  • Experience in developing functional requirements and procurement specifications for nuclear applications.
  • Familiarity with mechatronics and control systems for various plant components.
  • Excellent communication skills for client interactions and team collaboration.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in a relevant engineering field.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
