About the position

As a Senior Instrumentation & Controls Engineer at Sargent & Lundy, you will play a pivotal role in the modernization of power plant control systems, specifically focusing on the transition to new digital control systems. This position is crucial as our electric power generation clients are actively updating and replacing their existing systems to enhance operational efficiency and reliability. You will be part of a dynamic team within the Instrumentation and Controls Engineering group, which is experiencing significant growth due to the increasing demand for advanced engineering solutions in the nuclear power sector. Your responsibilities will encompass a variety of major process controls engineering projects aimed at upgrading and modifying nuclear power plants. This includes working with digital systems such as Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), Distributed Control Systems (DCS), touchscreen displays, network switches, and other control systems. You will be tasked with developing functional requirements and procurement specifications for instrumentation and control systems tailored for nuclear applications. Additionally, you will conduct evaluations for process instrumentation replacements and prepare nuclear modification packages to ensure compliance with industry standards. In this role, you will also engage in mechatronics and control systems design for critical components such as pumps, valves, heat exchangers, steam turbines, and reactors. Your expertise will contribute to improving the functionality and safety of our clients' plants. Regular interaction with clients is a key aspect of this position; you will attend meetings and perform site walkdowns to ensure that our deliverables meet client expectations and project specifications. Furthermore, you will have the opportunity to mentor and guide less experienced engineers in the field of nuclear instrumentation and controls design, fostering their professional development and enhancing the overall capabilities of our engineering team.

Responsibilities

  • Work on major process controls engineering projects for upgrades and modifications to nuclear power plants.
  • Develop functional requirements and procurement specifications for instrumentation and control systems for nuclear power plants.
  • Conduct process instrumentation replacement evaluation reports and prepare nuclear modification packages.
  • Design mechatronics and control systems for pumps, valves, heat exchangers, steam turbines, and reactors.
  • Attend client meetings and perform site walkdowns to ensure client satisfaction with work products.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to less experienced nuclear instrumentation and controls design engineers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in instrumentation and controls engineering, preferably in the nuclear power sector.
  • Strong knowledge of digital control systems, including PLC and DCS.
  • Experience with process instrumentation and control system design.
  • Ability to develop functional requirements and procurement specifications.
  • Excellent communication skills for client interactions and team collaboration.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Experience with mechatronics and advanced control systems.
  • Familiarity with nuclear power plant operations and regulations.
