About the position

As a Senior Instrumentation & Controls Engineer at Sargent & Lundy, you will play a pivotal role in the modernization of power plant control systems for our electric power generation clients. This position is fully remote, allowing you to work from home while contributing to significant projects that involve upgrading and replacing existing systems with advanced digital control technologies. Your expertise will be essential in ensuring that these upgrades meet the stringent requirements of nuclear power plants, focusing on areas such as digital systems, functional requirements, and process instrumentation evaluations. In this role, you will be responsible for developing and implementing control systems that enhance the functionality and safety of nuclear power plants. This includes working with various digital systems such as PLCs, DCS, and touchscreen displays, as well as evaluating and preparing procurement specifications for instrumentation and control systems. You will also be involved in creating detailed reports and nuclear modification packages, ensuring that all modifications comply with industry standards and client expectations. Your responsibilities will extend to mentoring less experienced engineers, providing guidance and support as they develop their skills in instrumentation and controls design. You will attend client meetings and perform site walkdowns to validate project scopes and ensure client satisfaction with the work produced. This position offers a unique opportunity to engage in challenging assignments that require troubleshooting and problem-solving across a variety of instrumentation and controls engineering issues, making it a critical role within our engineering team.

Responsibilities

  • Work on major process controls engineering projects for upgrades and modifications to nuclear power plants.
  • Develop functional requirement and procurement specifications for instrumentation and control systems.
  • Evaluate process instrumentation replacement reports and prepare nuclear modification packages.
  • Design control systems for pumps, valves, heat exchangers, steam turbines, and reactors to enhance plant functionality.
  • Attend client meetings and perform site walkdowns to ensure client satisfaction with work products.
  • Mentor less experienced nuclear instrumentation and controls design engineers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in instrumentation and controls engineering, preferably in the nuclear power industry.
  • Strong knowledge of digital control systems, including PLCs and DCS.
  • Experience with process instrumentation and control system design and evaluation.
  • Ability to prepare detailed technical reports and documentation.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in a relevant engineering field.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Experience with mechatronics and advanced control systems.
  • Familiarity with nuclear power plant operations and safety standards.
