About the position

The Senior I&C Engineer position at Kiewit involves leading and collaborating on instrumentation and control (I&C) design projects within the industrial market. This role requires hands-on design work, mentoring junior engineers, and delivering I&C design deliverables while supporting initial field testing. The engineer will ensure that designs meet contract requirements and standards, troubleshoot design constraints, and work closely with construction and commissioning teams. The position offers opportunities for travel up to 20% for quality testing of designed systems.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct engineering cost, feasibility, and planning studies analyzing customer needs and data.
  • Administer contracts for instrumentation and control equipment, especially the Distributed Control System (DCS) and Programmable Logic Controller (PLC).
  • Monitor and plan for required submittal dates.
  • Respond to questions and Requests for Interpretation (RFIs) from the construction contractor regarding instrumentation and control systems.
  • Perform intermediate calculations and solve problems using established scientific principles.
  • Conduct routine technical assignments and develop small to mid-size project proposals.
  • Work with designers to develop engineering and design documents as needed for the project.
  • Recognize, troubleshoot, and resolve design constraints and issues.
  • Apply economic analysis to determine the best cost solutions.
  • Utilize codes and standards to complete assignments.
  • Identify changes in the scope of work during a small project and produce design changes as needed to stay within budget and schedule.
  • Lead quality checks of the design and engineering of a small to mid-size project to ensure accuracy.
  • Review OEM vendor packages for technical compliance to specifications.
  • Develop I&C design deliverables including Instrument List, Instrument Data Sheets, IO List, Network Architecture, Loop Drawings, and Control Narratives.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in engineering in instrumentation controls, electrical, mechanical, chemical, physics, or equivalent from an ABET-accredited program.
  • At least 8 years' experience performing engineering-related duties.
  • Professional Engineer license preferred.
  • Experience with control system programming and fluency in reading logic diagrams.
  • Intermediate and advanced programming experience, especially with DCS and/or PLC programming.
  • Experience in field construction, industrial, power, or start-up work is desirable.

Nice-to-haves

  • Willingness to go to the field up to 20% of the time to perform testing of I&C systems and work with construction and commissioning teams.
