About the position

The Senior Intellectual Property (IP) Attorney at ABB plays a crucial role in providing legal advice and guidance on matters related to Intellectual Property protection, enforcement, and licensing. This position acts as a strategic business partner, focusing on quality and the company's best interests while managing the trademark lifecycle and overseeing outside counsel. The role involves analyzing technology transactions, supporting M&A transactions, and conducting litigation proceedings, all within a hybrid work model.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice on Intellectual Property (IP) protection, enforcement, and licensing.
  • Act as a proactive and strategic business partner with a focus on quality and customer interests.
  • Manage the trademark lifecycle and oversee outside counsel in IP matters.
  • Analyze technology transactions and negotiate terms to protect the organization's IP interests.
  • Implement knowledge of applicable IP law and technology law.
  • Support Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) transactions by conducting IP legal/contract reviews.
  • Conduct litigation and opposition proceedings in relevant geographies and collaborate with outside counsel.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an ABA accredited law school.
  • Currently licensed to practice law in at least one US state.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in the practice of IP law and IP processes.
  • Registration to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
  • Experience in patent drafting & prosecution, managing a patent portfolio, and developing an IP strategy.
  • Experience in drafting and negotiating complex IP agreements and terms.
  • Experience in performing opinion work such as freedom to operate/risk assessments.

Nice-to-haves

  • Moderate to strong experience providing IP support to strategic transactions such as M&A.
  • Experience with open-source software, including usage, licensing, and compliance.
  • Experience analyzing open-source licenses such as GPL.
  • Experience supporting IP litigation and working with outside counsel.
