About the position

The Senior IT Project Manager at Barnard College is a client-facing role responsible for managing the entire project lifecycle, from initial intake to project closure. This position involves collaboration with various stakeholders, including BCIT members, college administrators, and external vendors, to ensure successful project delivery. The role also includes leadership responsibilities and supports the transition to an agile IT organization, requiring a hybrid work presence based on project needs.

Responsibilities

  • Drive large project efforts from initial intake to product deployment.
  • Work with clients and BCIT leadership to assess strategic alignment, effort, and risk level of new project requests.
  • Support team formation and facilitate development of a common vision, initial scope, release plan, and communication plan for approved projects.
  • Lead project team through business analysis activities to elicit requirements, identify risks, manage stakeholders, and prioritize work.
  • Foster a collaborative environment between Barnard clients, BCIT resources, vendor resources, and other IT groups.
  • Serve as the single point of contact for all assigned project-related activities, including project deliverables, risk & issue management, change management, and scheduling meetings.
  • Monitor project progress and facilitate resolution of issues with vendors and key stakeholders through appropriate escalation channels.
  • Conduct retrospectives for continuous improvement and manage project budget, change orders, and invoicing.
  • Facilitate the transition from project to operations and collection of lessons learned.
  • Create and maintain project documentation and keep information current in the BCIT project portfolio management software.
  • Drive project teams towards successful delivery results and continuous improvement.
  • Work directly with senior management and project sponsors to secure acceptance and approval of deliverables.
  • Manage escalation of issues and facilitate the decision process for key decisions.
  • Coordinate project steering committee activities.
  • Build and nurture relationships with vendors, consultants, and Columbia community partners.
  • Coach/mentor other project managers and identify project management training needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in work experience.
  • Minimum 6 years of experience managing projects with a technology component.
  • Strong facilitation and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work both individually and as part of a team, acting as a servant leader.
  • Comfort with ambiguity and change, and ability to adapt to shifting priorities.
  • Autonomy, drive, and self-motivation.
  • Ability to synthesize and translate large amounts of unstructured information into clear business requirements.
  • Strong writing skills and highly organized.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop sets of strategic deliverables for large-scale, high-impact, complex projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet goals through influence where authority is not available.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor other project managers and staff in project management methodologies.
  • Proficient office productivity software skills (Office, Google Workspace).

Nice-to-haves

  • Business analysis experience, specifically eliciting and documenting requirements.
  • Agile or Lean certification(s) and experience.
  • PMP and other certifications from Project Management Institute (PMI).
  • Experience in managing vendor relationships and driving vendor deliverables.
  • Prior experience as an IT project manager in higher education.
  • Prior experience with large system implementations, process re-engineering projects, and user experience improvement projects.
  • Prior experience with student information systems, particularly Workday Student and Ellucian Colleague.
