About the position

Rocket Lab is seeking a Senior IT Cloud Engineer to join our IT team at our Long Beach, CA headquarters. This role is pivotal in leading the design and implementation of various cloud computing platforms and applications, specifically focusing on AWS. As a senior member of the team, you will play a crucial role in delivering a global infrastructure that supports our engineers and launch personnel in executing world-class launch capabilities. Your expertise will guide the development and maintenance of a highly reliable and available cloud infrastructure that meets the needs of Rocket Lab's diverse teams. In this position, you will be responsible for leading upgrades and maintenance efforts while emphasizing continuous improvement to ensure a secure and dependable infrastructure. You will oversee project scoping, planning, and deployment for cloud infrastructure, championing the IT Cloud Infrastructure Standards function at Rocket Lab. This includes ensuring compliance with company policies and cybersecurity standards, simplifying environment management practices, automating build and maintenance processes, and enhancing system reliability. You will also be tasked with providing clear reporting on usage, uptime, and support levels, as well as maintaining comprehensive documentation of environments and support processes. Collaboration is key in this role, as you will work alongside a team of world-class IT, engineering, and business professionals to deliver effective support and innovative solutions. Your contributions will directly impact Rocket Lab's mission to unlock the potential of space and improve life on Earth.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and implementation of cloud computing platforms and applications (AWS) at Rocket Lab.
  • Provide subject matter expertise and guidance for the cloud infrastructure supporting Rocket Lab teams.
  • Oversee upgrades, maintenance, and continuous improvement of the cloud infrastructure.
  • Lead project scoping, planning, and deployment for cloud infrastructure.
  • Champion IT Cloud Infrastructure Standards to ensure compliance with policies and cybersecurity standards.
  • Simplify and standardize environment management practices.
  • Automate build and maintenance processes to enhance reliability.
  • Ensure high availability and disaster recovery of systems.
  • Provide clear and concise reporting on usage, uptime, and support levels.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of environments and support processes.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in IT and a bachelor's degree or equivalent experience (9+ years of work experience).
  • 2+ years of experience in a platform-focused technology role.
  • In-depth knowledge of AWS enterprise environments.
  • Experience with Linux, Configuration Management, Automation, and/or Infrastructure as Code.
  • Familiarity with tools such as Ansible, Kubernetes, GitLab, TeamCity.
  • Knowledge of security frameworks/technology: ISO 27001, NIST 800-171, IPSEC, SSL VPNs, firewalls, etc.

  • Specialist qualification in area of expertise: CISM, AWS, Azure, Microsoft, etc.
