About the position

The Senior Lead Counsel 2 (Employment & HR) is a senior-level position at Citigroup responsible for providing expert legal advice and guidance on employment and human resources matters. This role serves as a key legal advisor to business stakeholders and functional partners, ensuring compliance with employment laws and regulations while influencing strategic decisions within the organization. The position requires a deep understanding of legal frameworks related to employment and HR, with the authority to negotiate and make independent decisions that significantly impact the company.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with employment laws and regulations; provide counsel to managers regarding compliance with employment laws.
  • Serve as a partner and advisor on employment contracts, claims of discrimination, and employment-related arbitration.
  • Advise on all matters pertaining to human resources within the organization, specifically discrimination, employment contracts, immigration law, workplace safety, data retention, and privacy.
  • Audit employment policies, practices, and compliance initiatives while identifying areas of risk.
  • Act as a recognized subject matter expert influencing practices within Employment & HR at Citi and the legal/financial services industry.
  • Partner with senior management and key regional management on Employment & HR issues.
  • Participate in senior forums covering strategy, risk management, and governance related to Employment & HR.
  • Provide critical inputs for future strategy execution within the organization.
  • Exercise operational responsibility for planning, finances/budgeting, and execution of results.
  • Lead workstreams to analyze implications of emerging and existing laws affecting the geography.
  • Participate in risk review and control forums, demonstrating awareness of potential financial, reputational, or legal consequences.
  • Negotiate and manage complex issues with senior leaders to influence strategy and make key decisions.
  • Identify and manage legal, regulatory, and reputational risks by collaborating with ICRM & Risk and following legal developments.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of specific relevant Employment & HR experience, including in-house legal experience in financial services.
  • Excellent leadership, interpersonal, organizational, and relationship management skills.
  • Experience working with regulators/regulatory bodies is preferred.
  • Proven ability to apply sound judgment while managing multiple assignments in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of laws, rules, and regulations related to Employment & HR, with awareness of changing regulatory environments.
  • Experience with complex deals and ability to analyze issues and develop recommendations.
  • Effective communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to build and maintain trusted relationships.
  • Bar license in good standing to practice law.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in financial services industry is preferred.
