About the position

The Senior/Lead Network Engineer at Brown University plays a crucial role in the Office of Information Technology, focusing on the planning, design, and implementation of all network-related services across the University. This encompasses a wide range of networking areas, including wired, wireless, and data center networks, as well as internet and cloud connectivity. The position also involves managing related network services such as DNS/DHCP, Network Authentication, client and peer-to-peer VPN, server load balancing, and various management and monitoring tools. The ideal candidate will possess a high level of knowledge and experience, complemented by excellent verbal and written communication skills. This enables the Senior/Lead Network Engineer to develop comprehensive project proposals and plans that may involve collaboration with other teams, managing projects with minimal oversight. Effective communication at varying technical levels is essential for success in this role. In addition to project management, the Senior/Lead Network Engineer is expected to independently research new technologies, services, and products through various methods, including peer correspondence, vendor meetings, classes, conferences, and online forums. As new opportunities arise, the engineer will develop content and present information to the team and management, assisting in the development of a technology roadmap and budget. The role requires the ability to represent the network team at various levels, engaging comfortably with subject matter experts, executive management, faculty, staff, and students, and responding appropriately to inquiries and requests.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, design, and implement all network-related services at the University.
  • Manage wired, wireless, and data center networks, including internet and cloud connectivity.
  • Oversee related network services such as DNS/DHCP, Network Authentication, client and p2p VPN, and server load balancing.
  • Develop project proposals and plans, managing projects with little or no oversight.
  • Research new technologies, services, and products independently.
  • Develop content and present information to assist in technology roadmap and budget development.
  • Represent the network team in discussions with various stakeholders, including executive management and faculty.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Training/certifications (such as CCNA, CWNA) preferred.
  • 3-4 years experience with wireless and ethernet network troubleshooting.
  • 2-3 years experience designing, supporting, and troubleshooting complex wireless networks is highly preferred.
  • Some programming or scripting experience using a common language such as Python is preferred.
  • Experience working in an authenticated environment using technologies such as 802.1x is preferred.
  • Expertise in advanced routing and switching on enterprise network systems.
  • Experience with designing, implementing troubleshooting BGP, OSPF, VRF-Lite and spanning-tree.
  • Knowledge of HA network configuration options (like VSS, VPC, SVS, MC-LAG), failover and troubleshooting.
  • Understanding of wireless network concepts using centralized controllers, encryption methods, authentication and RF planning.
  • Experience with firewall configuration options and performance tuning.
  • Knowledge of client and p2p VPN concepts and troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with monitoring protocols such as syslog, SNMP and netflow.
  • Experience with packet capturing using tools like Wireshark.
  • Experience with Cisco switching and routing, Aruba wireless networks is preferred.
  • Customer-facing technical support experience requiring verbal and written communication with customers and using a ticketing system.
