About the position

The Senior Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselor position at the Department of Veterans Affairs involves providing specialized outpatient care to Veterans diagnosed with various mental illnesses. The role requires a high level of clinical skill in assessing and treating complex psychosocial problems, developing treatment plans, and coordinating care with interdisciplinary teams. The counselor will work primarily within the Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Program (BHIP) and will be responsible for both clinical and administrative functions, ensuring effective therapeutic relationships with Veterans and their families.

Responsibilities

  • Provide high-level skill in assessing and treating complex psychosocial problems of Veterans with a range of mental health diagnoses.
  • Conduct psychosocial assessments and develop treatment plans in collaboration with Veterans and interdisciplinary teams.
  • Implement treatment modalities and provide counseling or psychotherapy for individuals, families, and groups.
  • Coordinate community-based services and referrals for additional support from VA and other programs.
  • Participate in scheduling, triaging, and monitoring patient flow in the Mental Health Clinic (MHC).
  • Establish and maintain effective therapeutic relationships with Veterans and their families.
  • Coordinate same-day access for Veterans within the BHIP Team and participate in team meetings.
  • Conduct chart audits and reviews to monitor fidelity to BHIP model of care.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Hold a master's or doctoral degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling or a related field from an accredited program.
  • Possess a full, current, and unrestricted license to independently practice as a Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselor.
  • At least one year of progressively complex LPMHC experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level.
  • Five years of post-licensed experience demonstrating advanced practice skills and judgment.
