About the position

The Senior Linux Systems Administrator at BAE Systems is responsible for the installation, configuration, and maintenance of UNIX and NT based platforms. This role involves managing user accounts, performing system backups, and ensuring the health of the IT infrastructure. The position requires a strong understanding of operating systems and the ability to support enterprise services, making it crucial for maintaining the overall functionality of the organization's IT systems.

Responsibilities

  • Install, configure, and network UNIX and/or NT based platforms.
  • Create, modify and delete user accounts, perform system backups, and maintain system configuration files.
  • Demonstrate a fundamental understanding of operating systems and be familiar with UNIX or NT commands or utilities at the user level.
  • Install and configure hardware, operating systems, and commercial software packages.
  • Develop and implement enterprise backup/recovery strategies, server configuration and consolidation, and verify the health and status of the entire IT infrastructure.
  • Provide support for enterprise services such as DNS, NFS, e-mail services, security protection mechanisms, and the interoperability of UNIX and NT based systems.

Requirements

  • TS/SCI clearance with appropriate poly.
  • Ability to work 100% onsite.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field and ten (10) years of demonstrable experience in system administration and support of a large client-server based IT enterprise, or five (5) years of full-time computer science work that can be substituted for the Bachelor's Degree and ten (10) years of demonstrable experience in system administration.
  • Experience with installation, configuration, and networking of UNIX and/or NT based platforms.
  • Fundamental understanding of operating systems and familiarity with UNIX or NT commands or utilities at the user level.
  • Experience with installation and configuration of hardware, operating systems, and commercial software packages.
  • Ability to develop and implement enterprise backup/recovery strategies, server configuration and consolidation, and verification of the health and status of the entire IT infrastructure.
  • Ability to provide support for enterprise services such as DNS, NFS, e-mail services, security protection mechanisms, and the interoperability of UNIX and NT based systems.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with servers running Sparc Solaris, SolarisX64, Red Hat, and SuSe.
  • Experience with client server technology utilizing NFS and CIFS.
  • Experience with large memory SMP systems with many cores.
  • Experience with enterprise client server configurations.
  • Experience with multi-vendor filesystems such as XFS, GPFS, and CXFS.
  • Experience with fielded systems and blade systems with associated interconnects.
  • Experience with Red Hat and Microsoft Windows Operating System, Microsoft Exchange, and Centrify.
  • Experience with infrastructure support services such as DNS, NIS, Active Directory, and Splunk.
  • Experience with thin client solutions based on Virtual bridges and Centrix.
