About the position

The Senior Linux Systems Administrator at Bowhead will play a crucial role in managing and supporting Linux-based servers and workstations in both unclassified and classified environments. This position requires a deep understanding of system administration, technical problem-solving skills, and the ability to provide in-depth consulting for system operations. The Senior Linux Administrator will work collaboratively within a team to ensure the smooth operation of servers and end-user workstations, while also potentially managing clustered systems. In this role, the administrator will be responsible for analyzing, designing, and implementing modifications to system software to enhance performance, rectify errors, or meet specific operational needs. The position also involves planning for new hardware acquisitions, developing operating policies, and engaging with vendors. The Senior Linux Administrator will educate users and collaborate with various projects within the organization to ensure that scientists and engineers can effectively utilize workstations and servers for their computational tasks. Additionally, the role includes supporting individual user workstations and associated software, managing application installations, overseeing license management, and ensuring proper software tracking and distribution. The administrator will also be responsible for backup and recovery of system configurations and user data files, as well as assisting users in account applications and access approvals.

Responsibilities

  • Providing technical problem solving and in-depth consulting for system operations.
  • Working as part of a team responsible for administration and management of servers and end-user workstations in both unclassified and classified environments.
  • Analyzing, designing, and implementing modifications to system software to improve performance, correct errors, or fulfill specific needs.
  • Participating in planning new hardware acquisitions and developing operating policies.
  • Interacting with vendors and educating customers about system operations.
  • Collaborating with scientists and engineers to help them utilize workstations and servers for computationally intensive problems.
  • Supporting individual user workstations and associated software.
  • Providing support for application installation, license management, software tracking/distribution, and backup/recovery of system configurations and user data files.
  • Assisting users in applying for accounts and approving user access.

Requirements

  • BS degree preferred.
  • 10-15 years of demonstrated experience in system administration of Linux-based servers and workstations.
  • Well-developed Linux system management skills.
  • Experience with hardware from HP and Dell systems.
  • Must meet DoD 8570 Information Assurance Technical (IAT) Level II certification at time of hire.
  • Demonstrated experience working in an environment with rapidly changing job priorities.
