About the position

The Senior Linux Systems Administrator will provide essential Linux systems administration support for the Advanced Technology Laboratory (ATL) at the Applied Research Laboratories. This role involves a variety of responsibilities including the installation, configuration, administration, maintenance, troubleshooting, and end-user support for various systems including servers, workstations, laptops, and virtual machines. The administrator will also manage all backup services and storage solutions, ensuring that installations and configurations are performed correctly and maintained over time. This includes working with SAN and NAS systems, performing audits for compliance with established information assurance policies, and documenting processes and configurations for change management. In addition to the technical responsibilities, the Senior Linux Systems Administrator will maintain inventories of computer hardware and software, ensuring that all documentation is up to date. The role requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. The candidate will also need to be able to work under pressure and accept supervision when necessary. The position is expected to continue indefinitely, with an immediate start date available for the right candidate.

Responsibilities

  • Perform Linux computer systems installation, configuration, administration, maintenance, troubleshooting, and end-user support for software, servers, workstations, laptops, and virtual machines.
  • Manage all backup services and storage solutions (SAN/NAS) installation, configuration, administration, maintenance, troubleshooting, and escalation.
  • Conduct and maintain Linux, backup, and storage systems audits for compliance with established information assurance policies and configuration guidelines.
  • Document and maintain processes, procedures, and configurations for Linux, storage, and backup solution configuration and change management.
  • Maintain computer hardware/software inventories and documentation.
  • Perform other related functions as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • At least four years of experience in Linux system administration.
  • Minimum of four years of experience with managing enterprise storage and backup solutions.
  • Experience with commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures used in maintaining backup and storage infrastructure.
  • Experience with FC, iSCSI, or other network storage protocols.
  • Experience with commonly used concepts, practices, procedures, and tools used in maintaining a Linux enterprise Infrastructure: RedHat or Ubuntu Linux.
  • Experience with shell scripting: Perl, Python, Bash, or similar.
  • Experience with networking and host-based computer security monitoring.
  • Candidate will need to obtain a DoD 8570.1/8140 IAT Level II Certification, such as CompTIA CySA+ or Security+, within 6 months of hire date.
  • Excellent organizational, problem-solving, written and oral communication skills.
  • Must have a professional demeanor, be punctual, and have the ability to work with little or no supervision.
  • Able to work under pressure and accept supervision.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field.
  • At least seven (7) years' experience in Linux system administration.
  • Current DoD 8570.1/8140 IAT II or greater certification for CySA+, Security+, GICSP, GSEC, or similar approved IA certifications.
  • Experience with system configuration management tools such as Salt, Kickstart, Cobbler, RHN Satellite, Ansible, or Puppet.
  • Experience with orchestration software such as Kubernetes, Docker, or Podman.
  • Experience with source code management tools such as Subversion or GIT.
  • Experience in web and database hosting environments such as Apache, nginx, MySQL/MariaDB, or Postgres.
