About the position

As a Senior Machine Learning Engineer in the AI for Autonomy Lab at Carnegie Mellon University, you will play a pivotal role in identifying, shaping, applying, conducting, and leading engineering research that aligns with critical needs of the U.S. government. The AI for Autonomy Lab focuses on researching and demonstrating the application of AI-related technologies to enhance the performance of autonomy systems. This position is integral to the SEI AI Division, which is dedicated to advancing the discipline of AI Engineering for Defense and National Security. You will be part of a team that builds real-world, mission-scale AI capabilities by solving practical engineering problems and preparing government customers for the unique challenges associated with adopting and deploying AI technologies. In this role, you will work closely with interdisciplinary teams to transform research results into prototype operational capabilities for government stakeholders. You will engage in hands-on prototyping of applied artificial intelligence, particularly in the context of machine learning for autonomy and uncrewed systems. Your responsibilities will also include collaborating with AI Division leaders to develop and execute a comprehensive research and engineering strategy, influencing the national research agenda regarding future technology. Additionally, you will mentor and teach others within the team, contributing to the overall technical capabilities of the SEI Artificial Intelligence Division. The position requires a deep technical knowledge of machine learning and artificial intelligence, with a strong emphasis on practical applications in real-world scenarios. You will be expected to have experience in robotics and autonomy, particularly in areas such as sensor fusion, navigation, and human-machine collaboration. Your role will also involve designing and conducting test and evaluation activities for machine learning components, ensuring their operational readiness and fit. Strong communication skills are essential, as you will need to interact collaboratively with customers and colleagues, presenting complex ideas clearly and effectively. Creativity, dedication, and a commitment to innovation are key attributes for success in this position.
