About the position

The Senior Machine Learning Engineer II position at Cruise focuses on developing machine learning models that enable autonomous vehicles to navigate urban environments safely and smoothly. This role involves both research and development aspects, including exploring new algorithms, optimizing model performance, and guiding technology choices within the Behaviors team. The position requires collaboration with various teams to integrate data from sensors and ensure accurate vehicle control, ultimately contributing to the advancement of self-driving technology.

Responsibilities

  • Explore, prototype, validate, and iterate new algorithms from a research perspective.
  • Drive efforts to optimize, supervise, and refine on-road performance for models on the path to production.
  • Guide current and future technology choices as a technical leader in the department.
  • Understand the business and operational impact of different technology tradeoffs and balance them based on company needs.
  • Enable other engineers on the team to be more effective through easy-to-extend design and code.
  • Influence others and build consensus over contentious technical debates.

Requirements

  • BS, MS, or higher degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent industry experience.
  • Extensive experience with machine learning frameworks such as TensorFlow, Caffe, and PyTorch.
  • Extensive experience with machine learning and classification.
  • Strong programming skills in Python or C++.
  • Excellent mathematical reasoning skills, especially with probability.
  • Passionate about self-driving car technology and its impact on the world.

Nice-to-haves

  • PhD in machine learning or computer science.
  • Experience with LLMs and LLAs.
  • Experience with ROS, OpenCV, Gazebo, or PCL.
  • Experience with CUDA.
  • Track record in deploying language models or robotics models into real-world environments.
  • Experience with autonomous driving technologies.
