About the position

The Senior Engineer MLE on the Autonomy Capabilities team at Cruise is responsible for delivering mission-critical autonomous driving features from concept to production. This role involves developing and maintaining key autonomous driving areas, coordinating projects across engineering teams, and creating algorithms to handle complex challenges in urban environments. The position requires collaboration with product teams to rapidly implement new functionalities that support operational area expansion, ultimately contributing to Cruise's goal of operating a fully driverless ridesharing service.

Responsibilities

  • Work with team leads and engineering leadership to prioritize development roadmaps and plan future projects.
  • Invent, extend, design, and develop next-generation features that expand Cruise's operational driving domain.
  • Understand the business and operational impact of technology tradeoffs and balance effectively based on company needs.
  • Influence cross-functional autonomy teams to build consensus on early-stage designs.
  • Play a key role in others' professional development by improving their technical skills.
  • Improve and deliver reliable software through continuous integration, automated testing, and code reviews.

Requirements

  • Extensive experience with ML frameworks such as Tensorflow, Caffe, and PyTorch.
  • Extensive experience with machine learning and classification.
  • Strong programming skills in Python or C++.
  • Ability to quickly understand any codebase.
  • Proven record of shipping products in the real world.
  • Passion for problem-solving across various technical areas.
  • Desire to root-cause issues regardless of where the search leads.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to clearly formulate, discuss, and solve novel problems.
  • Degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Aerospace, Mathematics, Physics, EE, or equivalent experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • PhD in machine learning or computer science.
  • Experience with ROS, OpenCV, Gazebo, or PCL.
  • Experience with CUDA.
  • Track record in deploying prediction models into real-world environments.
  • Experience developing safety-critical code (e.g., aerospace).
  • Experience with computational geometry or linear algebra.
  • Experience developing elegant state machines and business logic for complex systems.
  • Experience developing high-quality software under significant latency and performance constraints (e.g., video games, high-frequency trading).
  • Motion planning and robotics experience.
