About the position

The Senior Machine Learning Engineer at Carnegie Mellon University's Secure AI Lab will focus on engineering solutions that enhance the security and robustness of AI systems. This role involves conducting research in applied artificial intelligence, particularly in adversarial machine learning, and collaborating with government sponsors to develop and transition capabilities that address real-world challenges in AI deployment.

Responsibilities

• Building Machine Learning Models and Systems using frameworks like TensorFlow, PyTorch, and programming languages such as Python, C/C++, and Java.
• Conducting technical experimentation with modern and emerging machine learning frameworks and algorithms in various application domains.
• Performing testing and evaluation of AI systems for performance and security, including rapid prototyping and novel testing techniques.
• Collaborating with teams of developers, researchers, and government customers to understand challenges and develop solutions.
• Mentoring and teaching junior team members, contributing to the overall technical capabilities of the division.

Requirements

• A bachelor's degree in computer science, statistics, machine learning, electrical engineering, or related discipline with ten (10) years of experience; OR MS with eight (8) years; OR PhD with five (5) years of experience.
• An active Department of Defense TS/SCI security clearance is required.
• Legally authorized to work for Carnegie Mellon University in the United States without sponsorship.
• Willingness to travel up to 25% of the time to various locations.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience in adversarial machine learning is preferred.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills to convey complex technical ideas.
• Proficiency in writing funding proposals or pitching new research projects.
• Experience leading technical projects in novel areas.
