About the position

At the SEI AI Division, we conduct research in applied artificial intelligence and tackle the engineering questions related to the practical design and implementation of AI technologies and systems. Our mission is to lead a community-wide movement to mature the discipline of AI Engineering for Defense and National Security. As our government customers adopt AI and machine learning to provide leap-ahead mission capabilities, we focus on building real-world, mission-scale AI capabilities by solving practical engineering problems. We also discover and define the processes, practices, and tools necessary to operationalize AI for robust, secure, scalable, and human-centered mission capabilities. Our goal is to prepare our customers to face the unique challenges of adopting, deploying, using, and maintaining AI capabilities while identifying and investigating emerging AI and AI-adjacent technologies that are rapidly transforming the technology landscape. In this role as a senior machine learning engineer, you will be responsible for building machine learning capabilities using leading-edge technologies to address important and challenging government problems and needs. You will work with various machine learning frameworks and programming languages, contributing to the development of innovative solutions that enhance the capabilities of government organizations. Your work will involve technical experimentation with modern and emerging machine learning frameworks, methods, and algorithms, as well as collaboration with researchers at Carnegie Mellon University and other institutions.

Responsibilities

  • Build machine learning models and systems using frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, Torch, and Caffe.
  • Work with modern programming languages including Python, C/C++, and Java.
  • Develop and manage data pipelines, ETL processes, and backend systems.
  • Experiment with modern and emerging machine learning frameworks, methods, and algorithms.
  • Extend and implement state-of-the-art machine learning methods in various application domains such as computer vision and natural language processing.
  • Collaborate with team members on machine learning and software development projects.

Requirements

  • BS in Computer Science or equivalent experience with ten (10) years of experience; MS in Computer Science or equivalent experience with eight (8) years of experience; PhD in Computer Science or equivalent experience with five (5) years of experience.
  • Experience in collaborative coding environments, including open-source development projects.
  • Familiarity with Department of Defense and Intelligence Community practices and missions is a plus.
  • Ability to travel to other SEI offices, sponsor sites, conferences, and offsite meetings occasionally, with moderate (25%) travel outside of home location.
  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense security clearance.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with inverse reinforcement learning and adversarial machine learning.
  • Knowledge of custom hardware for scalable, high-performance machine learning.
  • Interest in human-computer interaction, data analytics, and advanced computing.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive health insurance coverage.
  • Retirement savings plan options.
  • Paid time off and holidays.
