About the position

Root is seeking a Senior Manager, Accounting who will play a pivotal role in driving finance transformation initiatives and streamlining business processes. This position requires a strong background in finance and accounting, with a focus on improving financial controls and implementing process enhancements. The Senior Manager will collaborate closely with the Director of Accounting Operations, IT Engineers, Finance Leadership, and other non-accounting team members to ensure the successful execution of strategic initiatives. The ideal candidate will possess the ability to leverage their accounting expertise to effect change across all levels of the organization, thriving in a fast-paced and complex accounting environment. In this role, you will manage and oversee the monthly closing process, which includes cash transactions, fixed assets, leases, and investment accounting. You will be responsible for reviewing journal entries and reconciliations for various accounts, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting, and owning quarterly and annual statutory filings. Additionally, you will assist in the review of state filings and develop and maintain accounting policies and procedures to ensure compliance with GAAP and STAT regulations. Your responsibilities will also include conducting accounting research on new pronouncements and significant transactions, establishing strong relationships with auditors and third-party vendors, and mentoring accounting staff to foster a collaborative team environment. As a leader, you will participate in strategic financial projects, such as automation and allocation tool implementation, and continuously improve month-end close and financial reporting procedures. You will identify and document key controls and lead various ad hoc projects as needed. This position offers the flexibility to work from any location across the US, supporting a work environment that adapts to individual needs while maintaining a strong headquarters presence in Columbus.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and oversee the monthly closing process, including cash transactions, fixed assets, leases, and investment accounting.
  • Review journal entries for a rotating set of processes.
  • Review reconciliations for accounts subject to journal entries reviewed.
  • Perform and review account analysis on a variety of company and intercompany transactions as well as overall financial statements.
  • Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting, including ownership of quarterly and annual statutory filings.
  • Assist in the review of various state filings on an annual basis.
  • Develop and maintain accounting policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with both GAAP and STAT regulatory compliance.
  • Assist with accounting research on new accounting pronouncements and significant, unusual transactions executed by the business.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with auditors and other third-party vendors.
  • Manage and mentor accounting staff, fostering a positive and collaborative team environment.
  • Lead and participate in strategic financial projects such as automation and allocation tool implementation.
  • Continually develop, expand and improve month-end close and financial reporting procedures by streamlining close-related activities.
  • Identify and document key controls.
  • Lead various ad hoc projects as needed.

Requirements

  • 7-10 years of relevant accounting and/or finance experience; exposure to property and casualty insurance accounting and reporting is a plus.
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance; CPA, MBA, or Master of Accountancy designation(s) preferred.
  • Exceptionally proficient with Microsoft Office products, accounting research, reconciliation systems, and data analysis tools.
  • Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and an ability to tailor it to a wide range of audiences.
  • Approaches problems with an open mind.
  • Great attention to detail.
