The office was established by Executive Order 68 and Local Law 155 in December 2021, marking it as the first mayoral office focused on the mental health of New Yorkers. OCMH collaborates with various City agencies to dismantle systemic and cultural barriers to care, promoting inclusivity and ensuring that vulnerable populations have access to essential mental health services. The office's commitment to equity, racial justice, and cultural responsiveness is central to its mission, emphasizing a community-centered, place-based, and strength-based approach that acknowledges diverse perspectives and experiences.
