About the position

The Senior Manager of Control Management Risk Assessment at American Express is responsible for embedding control management practices into the daily operations of the organization. This role involves extensive collaboration across various business units and geographies to identify, assess, and mitigate operational risks, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and internal policies. The position focuses on enhancing the resilience of the business unit through effective risk management methodologies and reporting.

Responsibilities

  • Provide additional identification of risks throughout business processes and systems along with business process owners.
  • Facilitate business units in their risk assessments performance, including Risk Control Self Assessment (RCSA) and periodic reviews.
  • Lead control monitoring and communicate key operational risk trends to senior management.
  • Identify areas of high-risk for intervention and conduct independent quality assurance and vertical process testing.
  • Compile thematic risk reporting to provide actionable insights on current risk levels and emerging trends.
  • Categorize controls and map against risks and processes across business units.
  • Support business units with risk identification and product changes within New Product Governance (NPG).
  • Champion risk management practices within the business.
  • Develop risk dashboards and key risk indicators (KRIs) for ongoing monitoring.
  • Maintain an updated risk register and develop risk profiles.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in operational risk management, preferably within Risk and/or Internal Audit functions.
  • Understanding of critical operational risk management lifecycle activities.
  • Excellent project management, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Expertise in process governance and establishing robust decision-making processes.
  • Experience in the financial services industry.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Business, Risk Management, or related field; advanced degrees or certifications are advantageous.
  • Experience in identifying operational risks throughout business processes and systems.
  • Experience in facilitating risk assessment performance and ensuring compliance with standards.
  • Experience in leading independent control monitoring and identifying control improvements.
  • Experience in compiling thematic risk reporting.
