About the position

The Senior Manager - Data Engineering & Machine Learning position at United Airlines offers an exciting opportunity to be part of a new, best-in-class data science and analytics team within the world's largest airline. This role is designed for an entrepreneurial and meticulous individual who will oversee the development of data for measurement and reporting across United's digital media. The successful candidate will be responsible for the overall design, development, and implementation of data engineering and machine learning solutions that support the marketing and loyalty initiatives of the company. In this role, the Senior Manager will manage a team of data engineers tasked with executing the data product roadmap and building reliable data infrastructure and pipelines. This includes ingestion, integration, ETL processes, and real-time connectors that are essential for effective measurement and reporting across AdTech products. The manager will ensure that connections with relevant endpoints for data ingestion are built and operate properly, facilitating seamless data flow. Collaboration is key in this position, as the Senior Manager will work closely with data scientists, analysts, and other stakeholders to translate business needs into data requirements. The role also involves managing communication vertically within the organization to keep stakeholders informed about key data and machine learning developments. The Senior Manager will continuously push the machine learning team to derive valuable insights from data, staying updated with emerging technologies and best practices in data engineering to drive innovation and efficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the development of data for measurement and reporting across United's digital media.
  • Design, develop, and implement data engineering and machine learning solutions.
  • Manage a team of data engineers to execute the data product roadmap.
  • Build reliable data infrastructure and pipelines for ingestion, integration, ETL, and real-time connectors.
  • Ensure proper operation of connections with relevant endpoints for data ingestion.
  • Collaborate with data scientists, analysts, and stakeholders to translate business needs into data requirements.
  • Manage communication to ensure stakeholders are aware of key data and ML developments.
  • Drive value-added insights derived from data through the ML team.
  • Stay updated with emerging technologies and best practices in data engineering.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of hands-on industry experience in Data Engineering or Machine Learning with increasing managerial responsibilities.
  • Profound technical acumen in machine learning with practical coding skills in Python, Java, and R.
  • Experience with ML frameworks and libraries such as TensorFlow, Pytorch, Keras, Scikit-Learn, Spark MLlib, and Langchain.
  • Deep technical knowledge of data engineering and ability to interpret complex reports.
  • Strong collaboration skills with cross-functional teams from tech, design, and business.
  • Experience leading teams in an agile setting.
  • Ability to translate complex business needs into actionable tasks for the ML team.
  • Familiarity with data visualization tools like Power BI and Tableau.
  • Strong communication skills to explain data implications to senior stakeholders.
  • Proactive problem-solving skills and ability to develop innovative solutions.

Nice-to-haves

  • Advanced Computer Engineering degree.
  • Experience with AdTech, particularly in designing solutions for ad targeting, measurement, and optimization.
  • Familiarity or hands-on experience with generative AI and large language models.
