About the position

The Senior Manager, Data Engineering at GEICO is responsible for leading a team of engineers to build high-performance, low-latency data engineering platforms and applications. This role focuses on transforming the current STAT reporting platform into a modern data engineering solution, ensuring alignment with business and product initiatives. The ideal candidate will possess deep technical expertise in open-source technologies and will be instrumental in driving the technical roadmap and increasing the velocity of product delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Work with your Director to address project dependencies and negotiate delivery dates with stakeholders.
  • Identify and raise project risks, presenting detailed solutions or alternatives.
  • Understand the impact of requirements and design choices across multiple systems.
  • Report on team progress for projects and key metrics.
  • Cultivate a culture that motivates team members to achieve higher performance levels.
  • Identify skill gaps within the team and create remediation plans.
  • Manage communication with leadership and provide feedback when appropriate.
  • Craft compliant quality documentation.
  • Lead people, products, and processes to innovate data-driven transformations.
  • Establish a long-term roadmap and business plan through strategic thinking and planning.
  • Build strong relationships with tech teams and business partners.
  • Work independently while being part of a cohesive management team.
  • Coach, develop, and manage associates and supervisors, including goal setting and performance evaluation.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to meet data quality requirements, SLAs, and SLOs.

Requirements

  • Proven management experience leading teams of 6+ engineers.
  • Strong understanding of data ingestion, transformation, management, quality, and lineage concepts.
  • Hands-on experience with modern open data stack technologies such as Apache Iceberg, Delta Lake, Spark, Flink, DBT, Python, Kafka, Airflow, NiFi.
  • Strong knowledge of cloud computing technologies (SaaS, PaaS, IaaS).
  • Fluency in at least one modern programming language (Python, Java, Go) and experience with open-source software.
  • Proven ability to learn technical concepts and adapt to new technologies quickly.
  • Strong knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure).
  • Proficiency in project management tools like GitHub and Azure DevOps.
  • Strong foundation in algorithms, data structures, and core computer science concepts.
  • Fluency with SQL and PowerBI.
  • Experience with application monitoring tools and performance assessments.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for diverse audiences.
  • Experience designing, building, optimizing, and scaling solutions using distributed computing.
  • Proven experience with CI/CD pipelines and build/release practices.
  • 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, including software development lifecycle best practices.
  • 5+ years of development in a large-scale, mission-critical environment.
  • 5+ years of hands-on supervisory experience in a technical environment.
  • 2+ years of experience with automated testing (Unit, Integration, End-to-End).
