About the position

The Senior Manager - Data Governance & Management position at American Express is a leadership role within the Global Accounts Receivable organization. This role focuses on driving data literacy and managing the data lifecycle, ensuring compliance with regulations, and collaborating with various business and technology partners to shape the data management roadmap. The successful candidate will be responsible for establishing trusted data sources, maintaining data definitions, and advocating for data usability improvements while leading a diverse tech team.

Responsibilities

  • Lead cross-functional sessions with various business units, architecture, product and engineering teams to understand their data needs and establish trusted sources of truth.
  • Partner with teams to classify data, maintain data definitions, and support data sourcing/usage requests.
  • Proactively define and document Business and Technical Metadata, data lineage, and data flow.
  • Responsible for communication related to changes impacting produced/consumed data.
  • Investigate, catalog, organize, and document internal and external application and system data.
  • Adopt leading technologies to enable data inventory, classification, and integration, while defining standards and facilitating continuous improvements.
  • Develop data retention frameworks and advocate for data usability improvements.
  • Own key stakeholder relationships across data offices and internal teams.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of direct work experience in large scale/enterprise data projects.
  • At least 3 years of direct experience in formal data governance and/or data management programs.
  • Strong experience in metadata management and knowledge of data standards.
  • Proven track record of driving improvements in business value through data management.
  • Strong working knowledge of data governance, data management, and data product techniques.
  • Knowledge of private and sensitive data protections and regulatory compliance.
  • Experience in designing and managing databases.
  • High-caliber leadership and communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Agile project methodology and tools such as Rally/Jira.
  • Working knowledge of Global AR data sources and systems.
