About the position

The Senior Manager Engineering and Design at Johnson & Johnson is responsible for leading complex capital projects related to engineering and design activities. This role involves collaborating with various teams and external partners to ensure project delivery aligns with J&J's business objectives and engineering practices. The position requires strategic planning, resource coordination, and oversight of design processes to achieve operational goals while fostering talent development within the team.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with external equipment and system suppliers to improve the standard design platform.
  • Work with J&J Operating Company Teams and E&PS Project Managers to ensure design elements are correctly implemented by third-party A/E firms.
  • Prepare Requests for Proposal (RFP) for Architect/Engineer (A/E) services and lead the A/E selection and onboarding process.
  • Prepare and negotiate standard J&J contracts with A/E firms for design works.
  • Lead the front-end design process across various disciplines including Architecture, Mechanical, Electrical, Process, and Automation.
  • Ensure adherence to the J&J IDEA Project Delivery Process.
  • Lead performance evaluations of A/E firms regarding cost, schedule, and quality, and define corrective action plans as necessary.
  • Collaborate with EHS on deploying wastewater guidelines.
  • Develop personal yearly regional goals that support overall J&J E&PS goals.
  • Complete tactical engineering plans based on strategic departmental plans.
  • Build networks and maintain extensive contacts within the industry.
  • Utilize the J&J Flawless Project Execution (FPX) process for project delivery.
  • Maintain relationships with IT and EHS organizations to integrate systems and requirements into water SDP's.
  • Apply Value Engineering and Constructability Reviews in projects.
  • Coordinate key design reviews with subject matter experts and corporate resources.
  • Ensure projects meet J&J Sustainability policy and drive the LEED certification process.
  • Review A/E progress and implement Earned Value tracking on larger projects.
  • Resolve key design conflicts during construction and commissioning phases.
  • Participate in final project close-out with A/E firms, including the Lessons Learned process.
  • Mentor younger engineers focused on water through training and one-on-one sessions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical) or closely related technical degree required.
  • Eight (8) years of related work experience required.
  • Proficiency in project/design management, including defining project priorities and ensuring resource availability.
  • Ability to develop metrics for design firm performance and implement continuous improvement plans.
  • Demonstrated teamwork across functional areas to establish effective working relationships.
  • Expertise in delivering complex projects/programs on schedule and budget.

Nice-to-haves

  • Prior experience in a lead role at an A/E Design Firm or directly leading A/E Firms.
  • Professional Engineering or Architectural License.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.
