About the position

The Senior Manager, Operations Business Risk Office at Golden 1 Credit Union is a pivotal role responsible for enhancing the effectiveness of the Operations Business Risk Office (BRO). This position ensures that operations process owners effectively balance risk acceptance and mitigation to maintain performance within the organization's risk appetite as the Credit Union expands. The BRO Senior Manager oversees all aspects of managing people, processes, frameworks, reporting, and documentation related to non-credit risk, which includes operational, strategic, compliance, and reputational risks. This role is crucial in identifying, assessing, mitigating, reporting, monitoring, and escalating risks associated with the Credit Union's operations. The Senior Manager will focus on four key objectives: first, to elevate the team to high performance by managing, developing, and coaching talent; second, to own the risk associated with processes within their mandate; third, to execute flawless and efficient processes by taking ownership of all requirements, systems, execution outcomes, member experience, metrics, reporting, and communication; and fourth, to cultivate peer relationships across the organization. In this role, the Senior Manager will lead and motivate a team in a fast-paced environment, develop and maintain an operational control management program, create defensible risk profiles, and implement risk management governance and control programs. They will also manage audit engagements, develop training for operations process owners, oversee third-party servicing activities, and evaluate member complaints related to control performance. The Senior Manager is expected to embody the values and mission of Golden 1 Credit Union, holding themselves and others accountable for their commitments and actions.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, motivate, and support a team within a time-sensitive and demanding environment, including career development plans, talent performance, engagement, and manager effectiveness.
  • Develop, execute, and maintain an operational control management program including framework, policies, procedures, control inventory, key surveillance points, risk rating, and control effectiveness.
  • Create defensible risk profiles by developing and maintaining qualitative risk measures and risk metrics for effective reporting.
  • Develop, execute, and maintain 1st line of defense risk management governance and control programs for operational and compliance risk management.
  • Work closely with second line of defense partners, legal, and audit departments to ensure compliance with credit union risk appetite.
  • Develop and implement ongoing training for 1st line operations process owners and managers across all aspects of risk management framework.
  • Lead departmental projects and support strategic project initiatives by providing detailed requirements and ensuring employee readiness.
  • Manage and oversee all third-party servicing activities, vendor performance, and related software systems.
  • Evaluate member complaints and trends as they relate to control performance and effectiveness.
  • Emulate and lead with behaviors and decision-making in line with the organization's values and mission.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field or equivalent work experience.
  • Seven years or more of progressively responsible management and supervisory experience within a credit union or financial institution overseeing production teams.
  • Strong people leadership and talent management experience with a proven track record to lead matrixed teams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for senior management correspondence.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.

Nice-to-haves

  • Possession of a valid California driver's license is desirable but not essential.
  • Experience in conflict management and business negotiation processes.
