About the position

The Senior Manager Payroll position at Iowa State University is a leadership role responsible for overseeing all payroll activities for the university's multi-state payroll operations. This position ensures accurate and timely payroll processing, compliance with payroll laws, and effective management of payroll staff. The successful candidate will work in a dynamic environment, collaborating with various departments and external groups to enhance payroll functions and maintain high standards of service.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and direct all payroll activities involved in processing the University's multi-state payroll.
  • Ensure accurate and timely payroll payments are made.
  • Develop and maintain checks and balances and segregation of duties within payroll processes.
  • Manage payroll staff by providing training, education, and career development opportunities.
  • Maintain a high level understanding of domestic and international payroll laws, wage levy, and garnishment regulations.
  • Collaborate with internal tax professionals for accurate state and federal tax withholding and payroll tax returns preparation.
  • Build strong relationships with university departments and external peer groups.
  • Oversee the payroll function within the Workday platform, ensuring compliance with regulations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and 7 years of related experience.
  • Payroll experience in a mid-high volume multi-state environment.
  • 2+ years previous supervisory experience.
  • Certified Payroll Practitioner (CPP) preferred.
  • Experience and training in payroll systems such as Workday, ADP, Kronos, or UltiPro.

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
