About the position

The Senior Manager of Risk Management at American Express is responsible for leading the assessment and management of institutional credit risk across various business units globally. This role involves rating and underwriting credit exposures, conducting thorough financial analyses, and collaborating with multiple stakeholders to ensure sound decision-making that maximizes profitability while mitigating risk. The position is critical in maintaining compliance with global banking standards and requires a deep understanding of financial principles and market trends.

Responsibilities

  • Rate and underwrite credit exposures in assigned regions, industries, and business lines.
  • Conduct fundamental analysis including reviews of business, financial, industry, and country risk.
  • Collaborate with front office sales, business unit risk partners, and credit administration.
  • Prepare company-specific and industry-wide credit memorandums.
  • Make sound rating and underwriting decisions to maximize profitability and mitigate risk.

Requirements

  • 4 years' experience rating and/or underwriting at a financial institution or rating agency.
  • Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, economics, or statistics.
  • Thorough understanding of fundamental financial analysis and corporate financial statements.
  • Comfort with GAAP/IFRS accounting standards, corporate valuation, and forecasting.
  • Knowledge of probability of default and loss given default.
  • Experience in determining credit capacity and risk mitigation techniques.
  • Familiarity with banking regulations, particularly those imposed by Basel Committee on Banking Supervision.

Nice-to-haves

  • Graduate degree with a finance or business emphasis, or Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation.
  • Experience with rating and underwriting in the Financial Institutions industry.
  • Specific industry expertise in travel, financial institutions, or public finance.
