About the position

As a Senior Manager of Software Engineering (Back End) at Capital One, you will play a pivotal role in leading a diverse portfolio of technology projects. You will manage a team of developers who possess deep expertise in distributed microservices and full-stack systems, working collaboratively to create innovative solutions that address the regulatory needs of the company. Your leadership will be crucial in driving the transformation of Capital One's technology landscape, ensuring that we meet the evolving needs of our customers and the financial services industry. In this role, you will be expected to share your passion for technology by staying abreast of the latest trends, experimenting with new technologies, and actively participating in both internal and external technology communities. Mentoring fellow engineers will be a key aspect of your responsibilities, as you guide them in their professional development. Additionally, you may be called upon to contribute to coding efforts or to evaluate code, ensuring that the highest standards of quality are maintained across all projects. Collaboration will be at the heart of your work, as you will partner with digital product managers to deliver robust cloud-based solutions that enhance user experiences and empower millions of Americans in their financial journeys. You will utilize a variety of programming languages and tools, including Java, Python, SQL, Node, Go, and Scala, as well as Open Source RDBMS and NoSQL databases, and container orchestration services like Docker and Kubernetes. Your expertise in AWS tools and services will be essential in driving the success of your projects.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a portfolio of diverse technology projects and a team of developers.
  • Create solutions that help meet regulatory needs for the company.
  • Stay on top of tech trends and experiment with new technologies.
  • Participate in internal and external technology communities.
  • Mentor other members of the engineering community.
  • Collaborate with digital product managers to deliver cloud-based solutions.
  • Utilize programming languages such as Java, Python, SQL, Node, Go, and Scala.
  • Work with Open Source RDBMS and NoSQL databases.
  • Use container orchestration services including Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Leverage a variety of AWS tools and services.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field.
  • At least 8 years of professional software engineering experience (Internship experience does not apply).
  • At least 1 year of experience with cloud computing (AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud).
  • At least 4 years of people management experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's Degree in a relevant field.
  • 9+ years of experience in at least one of the following: Java, Scala, Python, Go, or Node.js.
  • 3+ years of experience with AWS, GCP, Azure, or another cloud service.
  • 4+ years of experience in open source frameworks.
  • 7+ years of people management experience.
  • 2+ years of experience in Agile practices.
