About the position

At Capital One, we are looking for a Senior Manager of Software Engineering specializing in Back End development. This role is pivotal in leading a diverse portfolio of technology projects while managing a team of skilled developers. You will be at the forefront of driving significant transformations within the company, focusing on creating solutions that meet regulatory needs through distributed microservices and full-stack systems. Your leadership will not only involve overseeing project delivery but also mentoring team members and fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration. As a Senior Manager, you will share your passion for technology by staying updated on the latest trends, experimenting with new technologies, and actively participating in both internal and external technology communities. You will collaborate closely with digital product managers to deliver robust cloud-based solutions that enhance user experiences and empower millions of Americans financially. Your technical expertise will be crucial as you utilize programming languages such as Java, Python, SQL, Node, Go, and Scala, along with various AWS tools and services, to build scalable and efficient systems. This position requires a strong background in software engineering, with a focus on cloud computing and people management. You will be expected to lead by example, occasionally coding or evaluating code, and ensuring that your team adheres to best practices in software development. Your ability to manage and inspire a team will be essential in achieving our goals and driving the success of our technology initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a portfolio of diverse technology projects and a team of developers.
  • Create solutions that help meet regulatory needs for the company.
  • Stay on top of tech trends and experiment with new technologies.
  • Participate in internal and external technology communities.
  • Mentor other members of the engineering community.
  • Collaborate with digital product managers to deliver robust cloud-based solutions.
  • Utilize programming languages like Java, Python, SQL, Node, Go, and Scala.
  • Work with Open Source RDBMS and NoSQL databases.
  • Manage Container Orchestration services including Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Leverage a variety of AWS tools and services.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field.
  • At least 8 years of professional software engineering experience (Internship experience does not apply).
  • At least 1 year of experience with cloud computing (AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud).
  • At least 4 years of people management experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's Degree in a relevant field.
  • 9+ years of experience in at least one of the following: Java, Scala, Python, Go, or Node.js.
  • 3+ years of experience with AWS, GCP, Azure, or another cloud service.
  • 4+ years of experience in open source frameworks.
  • 7+ years of people management experience.
  • 2+ years of experience in Agile practices.
