About the position

The Sponsored Search Data team at Walmart is tasked with the design, implementation, and maintenance of data pipelines, databases, and ETL processes for the Sponsored Search Advertising platform. This role is crucial as it ensures the quality, availability, and reliability of data for analytics and reporting purposes, which are essential for advertisers utilizing the self-serve platform. The team collaborates with various departments within Walmart to create reusable technologies that facilitate customer acquisition and onboarding, while also empowering merchants. This collaboration is aimed at optimizing tariffs and assortment in line with Walmart's Everyday Low Cost philosophy, ultimately delivering customized experiences for customers across multiple channels, including in-store, mobile apps, and websites. In this position, you will demonstrate strong leadership skills and a growth mindset, focusing on developing scalable systems. You will lead a team of data engineers, providing technical guidance and expertise in various aspects of data engineering within a scalable ecosystem. Your responsibilities will include participating in code reviews, identifying areas for continuous improvement, and mentoring team members to help them reach their full potential. You will also engage with cross-functional teams to foster a collaborative culture and develop a vision and strategy for the team that aligns with business and technology objectives. Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop a team of data engineers through hiring, coaching, mentoring, and career development.
  • Provide technical guidance and expertise in various aspects of data engineering within a scalable ecosystem.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to foster a culture of collaboration.
  • Participate in code reviews, pull requests, and design reviews.
  • Identify areas for continuous improvement and advocate for necessary actions.
  • Delegate tasks, provide context, and coach team members to exceed expectations.
  • Develop a vision and strategy for the team, leveraging your understanding of business and technology.
  • Engage, coach, and guide high-performing engineers to achieve success.
  • Mentor individual team members to help them reach their full potential through observation and feedback.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years of management experience in a technical organization.
  • Proficiency in data-driven and data-informed product development.
  • Strong understanding of backend software engineering, data engineering, and basic data science.
  • Proven track record of attracting and nurturing talented engineers.
  • Deep knowledge of big data challenges and ecosystem.
  • Experience with SQL, data modeling, ETL processes, and building data pipelines.
  • Familiarity with Spark, Spark Streaming, and Kafka.
  • Previous collaboration with Data Science or analytics teams.
  • Proficiency in at least one high-level programming language, such as Python.
  • Graduate degree in Computer Science or related field.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 3 years' experience in software engineering or related area.
  • Background in creating inclusive digital experiences and knowledge of implementing Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standards.
